Hi. I’ve just joined this group. I’ve had IBS for 30 years or so. Usually I can ignore it except for flare- ups like the one I’ve been having for about 6 weeks. I take Buscopan but at the moment it’s not helping. I’m under a lot of stress at home and I’m sure this what’s causing it. Diet-wise I’m vegan. I don’t drink alcohol and I only have 2 cups of coffee a day. Just thought I’d join this group for tips/support/etc. I’m a member of the heart group among others. Thanks

flare up

I have had flare ups that have lasted for weeks. Not always at their ultimate worst every day in that time, but a "tummy definitely not right" situation. Those bad phases did ease up with me. Sometimes to the extent that I forgot I had IBS, and was convinced I was better!....for ever! Umpteen times I fell for IBS's tricks.
But a good idea if you are in pain and it's not getting better and nothing is helping, then do get that checked in case it's something else, like diverticular problems or some other thing.
Another trick IBS can play is masking some other possible issue, and that being passed off (even by doctors!) as "just IBS". So be instinctive with it.
But yes, bad gut times can last weeks.
I found a vegan diet just a bit too harsh and fibre heavy for my tummy, as many vegan proteins like pulses were suddenly way too much for my body, but what suits one doesn't always suit everyone, and it might be OK for you generally.
I found onions and garlic also difficult suddenly, and most of my vegan recipes contained onions and garlic before!
I hope you will come out the other side soon.
