Hi, wondering if anyone has any ideas or tips to help please. My relative who has spells of ibs is having a hard time at mo. She is experiencing rushing to toilet mainly between 11 and 1 at night, up to 10 times. She is bedbound due to extreme tiredness and feeling faint/ actually fainted yday.Dr called in paramedics but after testing her believed she'd be better off at home. She's eating very little, awaiting stool test results & bloods showed minor inflammation this wk.
Due to not eating much we are wondering why it is this time of night it is triggering? Are protein drinks useful to try?
She's been put on gastro restrictors recently, but they think they may not be helping, so taken her off those & few other health issues being looked into.
Any help much appreciated thank you.

It seems an unusual time to be rushing to the toilet if it only happens at the time. Has your relative been previously diagnosed with IBS or waiting for a diagnosis or a re-diagnosis? Are these symptoms new? Unfortunately, until the doctors come back with results and obtain a formal diagnosis, it is hard to know how to proceed. I'm wondering if they are suffering from overflow diarrheoa and the issue is actually constipation that needs to be worked on, but you'd need the doctor to help with that. For example, for diarrhoea I could mention eating white jasmine rice and protein to slow it down (since only digested in the small intestine with no residue for the colon). However, if it is constipation related, that would only make things worse. She really needs those results back to know how to proceed.
Many thanks for your helpful & detailed reply. Yes, does seem an unusual.time, immediate thought was something being eaten for tea but not the case as she's not been eating much at all.Last night seemed to be a turning point thank fully & she slept all night and managed little breakfast & soup for lunch. They are thinking along lines it was the gastroinhibitors-are they a type of PPI's?(I have a b12 deficiency so have heard mention of those on PA site)
She also had an electrolyte drink with a friendly bacteria in yesterday afternoon, so doesn't know if this was coincidental? Bit concerned as she's recently been diagnosed with possible AF & awaiting further, so not sure if those drinks would interfere with that, do you? She's feeling less faint today & been able to get toilet independently, so a good sign.
Results will be back tomorrow & may shed further light...
Interesting about jasmine rice, always known white rice is advised for such problems, but didn't know exactly why, thanks.
Thank you. I've just had a little read about that, all very interesting, had never heard of it & useful to consider as possibility. You must've done well to source that condition & treatment & very glad you've found an answer to help!I know fatty foods exaberate health in general, but do you think especially so in what you're suggesting,
Shes improved today after sleeping through night. so a good step forward at least.Thank you for your help...
I have reduced fat, coffee and all cruciferous veg. And I don’t eat or drink after 8pm if I can manage it. AF can certainly cause weakness and dizziness. I do hope she gets help. Miserable to feel so unwell.
