Suffering from IBS for years, have a flare up for a week now,so tired, irritable and in constant pain..i can deal with that. But now, someone just told me on a media platform that I am faking an illness,as IBS is just a made up,sh***y diet ,nothing more.

I am upset, probably should not be,but it is affecting my mental health, which is not great either in the last few years.

My doctor haven't seen me for a year,my medical letters arriving not correct, lot of mistakes regarding my symptoms,my letters sent to a gp surgery I never been to etc..

I complained about all this,so waiting to have a face to face meeting with the hospitals complaints team.

So,why are people mistreated like this?I have to fight as nobody understands that you feel rubbish etc...

You are right. Many illnesses are dismissed, sometimes especially when they affect women. IBS, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, have been dismissed. Ulcers, including bleeding ulcers were thought to be caused by stress for many years until it was discovered that they were caused by a bacterium. You might want to avoid that media platform in the future.

I'm afraid to say that some people are idiots. They are not very well informed and try to put other people or situations down to make them feel better about themselves. What comes out of people's mouths tends to be about them and not about the people they are targeting. Best to try to ignore them. Take most of what you read on social media with a pinch of salt or ignore those sites. When I look for information on the internet, I'm looking at official scientific websites or articles with proper references back to scientific websites. The rest of it you can ignore, since more often than not it is about someone's opinion without any basis and they are not qualified to give that opinion.

Great that you are making a complaint. Unfortunately, the health service can be a bit of a lottery. There are some better GPs, consultants etc. out there. Sometimes you have to move GP practices or ask for another GP to get better service, but good to complain, because unless people do, standards can't be improved. Good luck.

xjrs, I totally agree with everything you stated in your reply to sunshine76ibs. This forum is such a help to us sufferers.

Good for you complaining! As the old saying goes- it's the squeaky wheel that get the oil!! Make notes about specific errors, as an aide memoire, as it's easy to forget when faced with bureaucracy! I had several errors on my record corrected-it's easily done at times, but should be overseen by another-one of mine said I was taking 100mg thyroxine! I'd be on the ceiling if that was the case! Good luck and stick to your guns!!

Hi,

IBS is absolutely not made up. It can often be triggered by stress as the vagus nerve links the gut and brain. If stress is an issue try doing box breathing. It can be a great help if you stick to doing it. You breathe in through your mouth for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds and hold your breath for 4 seconds. Do that continuoulsy for 12 minutes twice a day for 12 weeks.

As a Gut Health Nutritional Advisor I can tell you that your symptoms are definitely not faked. You have a genuine problem which needs addressing. Try to eat foods low in FODMAPS (you can find this out on a google search).

If you want further information please feel free to reach out.
