IBS and Blood Pressure meds

Hi - can anyone who suffers with IBS and has high blood pressure advise of any BP medication they are taking that doesnt upset the stomach / bowel. Since requiring to increase the meds, I have had major problems requiring me continually changing the BP medication. Have had, Candesartan, Losartan, Ramipril and currently on Bisoprolol which is causing a few issues currently but am tolerating to see if things improve. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Railman40,

Funnily enough, I replied to a similar question earlier today. I take betablockers (Atenolol) for high blood pressure, have done for years. At one point they changed it to Ramipril, an (ACE) inhibitor, but it really messed with my IBS so I got it changed back to Atenolol. I would say that I think the Atenolol does have a slight calming effect which may help a little with the IBS.

All the best, Maureen

Thanks for the response - my Dr suggested this the other day so if Bisoprolol doesnt calm down, it may be a good option.

I have tried 5 if them, every single one sent my IBS-D out of control and I could barely leave my house. I definitely lately cannot tolerate them at all.

I am on amlodipine and don't have any problem with it. Having said that I am on lots of meds and am always tired and cramps. Don't really know what's causing it anymore. All I do know is when first put on it I didn't notice any difference.

Nifedipine here. No GI problems to speak of.

I'm on Indapamide and Losartan. My IBS is anxiety related and has got worse over the last year, not sure whether the BP tablets are to blame though. I think it's just my anxiety and IBS to be honest.

I take Bendroflumethiazide and amlodipine. I don’t think they are a problem

I have been on Losartan for 15 or so years. It does not react with my IBD and IBD.

I can't make any recommendations, unfortunately, but reading your message was a "lightbulb moment" for me. I am taking losartan and amlodipine, which keep my BP at an acceptable level, but my IBS is becoming very difficult to manage. I hadn't even considered that the BP meds might be causing it. Thank you for inspiring me to look into the possible connections. I really hope you find a solution.
