How do I reduce wind symptoms in IBS?

Catherine22 profile image
32 Replies

My IBS has been causing a lot of problems with my bladder working properly due to trapped wind in my stomach/passage. I’m wondering if anyone has similar issues? My stomach is so overactive and I have constant gurgling when I’ve been lying down for long periods (the reason why I’m always awake early in the morning!) I’m always struggling to relax my muscles and just need to know how I can manage it better. I go to yoga classes in the evening and I have got various physiotherapy exercises which help to some extent.

The problems with IBS is it can effect you in different ways. I myself get up early in the morning for work and sometimes I can wake up with discomfort in the stomach. I think it depends on what we eat the day/night before. Like sometimes I like a bit of chocolate at night.,But then in the morning bam I need to Rush to the toilet because it made me feel in so much pain. So I understand how you feel,So I think its about doing a food diary and try and rule out what kind of food irritates you. Do you take any medication for your IBS? That can help if you don't.

Thanks for your help, yes I know that eating anything late in the evening upsets my stomach so I try not to do that now. I have tried the elimination diet but didn’t work out. I have some info about the low FODMAP diet from my dietician so I will read into that. I have stopped taking medication for IBS as there were too many side affects involved.

Ah bless you, it’s not nice all this wind and bloating. Thanks for your help I will try and look at foods I’m having but nothing has stood out for me at the moment. Also going to try peppermint oil capsules once a day to see if it relieves anything.

I’m not sure, I’ve been on all sorts of laxatives and linaclotide capsules. Nothing seemed to help.

I have been diagnosed with IBS C as i struggle passing my stools even though I go quite frequently. It’s very strange how the body works.

I get the same thing, loads of wind that just won’t shift. I found that ‘Wind Settlers’ pills make things a lot more bearable. I’m awaiting a colonoscopy so in the meantime my doc suggested I take half a sachet of Fybogel once a day to regulate my guts- it works really well and keeps things at a slower pace!

I find that if my IBS is over active then it affects my bladder and makes me need to pee more often. I wonder if anti spasmodics would help your muscles relax?

Are you on the Fodmap diet? Has your doctor warned you not to eat fibrous foods, fizzy drinks of any kind, garlic, onions and spices?

Hi thanks for the info. Yes I have the same problems with my bladder, I haven’t tried anti spasmodics yet. Might be worth a go. I’m going to look at going on the FODMAP diet, yes I try not to eat too much of those foods you mentioned.

A dietician told me not to eat fruit or tomatoes. She was right. If I try to eat fruit, salads or any veg other than carrots I am in agony. I think its because of the fibre which irritates the biwel lining and the fact that vegetables and fruit tend to ferment more in the gut causing gas/ wind, especially onion and garlic. They are killers!

Okay I will look into my diet and see if anything will ease it, thanks

Yes that’s me! When I have an IBS attack, it also affects my bladder! My trigger is definitely onions, recently had an experience on a camping trip after eating onions at 5 a.m. it was not good!

Buscopan is good to relax the guts, but NOT peppermint oil or mint that research has recently shown makes matters worse. I found that to be the case.

That sounds exactly like what I went through for years before they found out the real cause. Especially all the stomach gurgling and gas. Doctors treated me for everything under the sun before sending me in for an endoscopy. Then they found it was one or more "severe ulcers". Luckily they had just discovered that ulcers are not caused by stress. Stress is the symptom of the ulcer which is actually caused by the H Pylori bacteria. An antibiotic cured it in a matter of days. Good luck.

I find charcoal tablets before and after food help. I take them if I'm eating out or if I'm having a big meal which I don't do to often. My tummy prefers small meals these days and I know most of my triggers which has made a massive difference to my wind issues. I've just discovered I can eat olive bread I'm sooooo happy right now lol . Good luck I hope you find something that works for you.

I usually take IBgard, seems to help with the bloating. I am having a flare now. My upper stomach gets huge from the bloating. I also started a food journal to see if I can track down what makes me soooo bloated. I had a CT scan, colonoscopy, endoscopy, breath test and everything looks fine. This is so annoying and frustrating. Sometimes I feel like something is twisted right under my bra line. It’s been six years like this

Oh no doesn’t sound good, hope you feel better soon. I’ve had lots of tests under the Gastro consultant, I haven’t had an endoscopy though
