So I’ve been on a gluten free and dairy free diet for almost a year and up until a couple of months ago all was good. Now I’ve started to feel like I haven’t finished but can’t go anymore. Then a little while later I suddenly have this urgency to go again. I had a dentist appointment this morning and went before I left home then when I got there suddenly needed to go again but they had the door locked and were only letting one person in at once and there was a lady in front of me. So I ran back to the car to go to a public toilet but didn’t make it in time. I was mortified and had to go home and cancel my appointment I feel so bad and can’t understand why this has started up again. Has anyone got any ideas. It has really upset me X

Almost everyone with IBS d has had this happen. It is very upsetting, as I know from personal experience. The only thing you can do is try to forget about it. In a few days I think it will fade from your mind.❤️

Were you worried at all about going to the dentist? Stress can trigger bowel movements

Hello. Your question really resonated with me. I’ve also been gluten free and dairy free for about 18 months, mainly to help with joint pain, and I also have a history of IBS. Even though I feel so much better for giving these foods up, I now have a very sensitive digestion which can be triggered into overdrive if I eat something I shouldn’t. My rheumatology consultant told me this is quite a normal and unfortunate phenomenon after exclusion diets.

I’ve also experienced urgent bowel movements more recently…once on a lovely walk with friends and I ended up squatting in the corner of a field surrounded by bluebells! That was a low point while everyone waited 😳 Diarrhoea is unusual for me as I’m normally constipated. I’m being checked out for Diverticulitis as this can cause alternating constipation and sudden bouts of diarrhoea.

I’m very sorry you’re going through this. The unpredictability of it is very stressful. I’m currently off coffee, fatty food and spicy food until things settle. Hope you can find your triggers xx

Just wondered if you have heard of overflow diarrhoea, sometimes if you are constipated you can get this. See link below:

Just in case you were unaware of it. I hadn't heard of it until I joined this site!

Hello, yes I had heard of it. My Mum had it once when she was in a care home. I felt really sorry for her. My last bout of diarrhoea lasted about a week and I eventually got it under control with Imodium. I’m not sure it would classed as overflow but it could be? I guess with diverticulitis, things like poo or waste food get stuck in the bulging pouches of your colon, this could cause a blockage so very similar. Thanks for your advice.

I have recently had this issue for the first time after many years of IBS. When I feel like it might happen I keep a thick menstrual pad or even a pull-up diaper on hand and occasionally even wear it, which makes me feel less worried and thus relieves a good deal of stress, thus generally preventing an accident from occurring. Good luck!

Thanks I’ve got some tena pants I used to wear them often but I’ve been fine for ages now guess I will have to start putting them on when I go out again.

That has happened me very same only lucky enough they have the toilet free but it happened once I was stuck in traffic and boom out it came I was heading to visit my sister as I live in the country and I had to have a wash in her house and get clothes from her, it happens to her to she's IBS C and I'm IBS D it also happened on a walk but I wear the always descreet pads that's for bladder weakness there more absorbent and hold it good, another time going into the shopping center but Im usually prepared with extra pads and wipes, lately I'm taking one a day of Imodium and so far fingers crossed it's working I take it after a bowel movement and it slows things down, I always feel down and dirty after an accident but I just have to put it one side until next time
