Good morning all.

I wake up constantly every morning with lower back pain on the one side. Does any one else have history of this and have been diagnosed?

It goes away after about 15 minutes but it’s irritating me before it does go away.

Same! I battle with back pain...

Have you thought it could be your mattress as I'm waking up with lower back pain every morning and I'm pretty sure it's the mattress.

Me too and I think the same, mattress is old and needs replacing.

That would certainly be worth looking into, especially as your mattress is old. I hope that your back improves.

Hi all. Thanks for the responses. Back pain is awful. I don’t think it’s the mattress. We change it regularly. We have had 3 mattresses in 18 months and all have had the same. The pain eases when I go to the toilet as well. The current one is designed apparently for back problems.

I had the same problem with the side pain. I eventually took the memory topper off my bed and back to a hard bed and it has given me 80% less pain

So are these soft memory bed a good thing ? I wonder ?

Have you discussed these symptoms with your GP? They may want to carry out some tests.

You may be suffering from visceral hypersensitivity (functional abdominal pain) - there is info about it here:

iffgd.org/lower-gi-disorder...

It is where the brain interprets the normal activity of the bowel as pain - this is due to a wearing down of neurons in pain control centres of the brain which can be caused by PTSD, neglect or abuse in childhood, extreme stressful events etc. The first line treatment is nerve pain agents such as low dose amitriptyline. There is a theory that being on something like amitriptyline for 6-12 months can help the pain control centre neurons to regenerate. Note that amitriptyline can cause constipation, but this can be helpful in people who are diarrhea dominant.

I used to suffer from this lower back pain at night/early morning. This is when the bowel is at its most active preparing for a BM in the morning. I was diagnosed with visceral hypersensitivity. Unfortunately I couldn't tolerate the standard treatment for it. Linaclotide (for IBS-C only) & Alflorex have helped me with this intestinal pain.

You may also find assistance with anti-spasmodic medication such as mebeverine (Colofac) or enteric coated peppermint.

However, you first need a diagnosis prior to progressing with any treatment.

Not what you're looking for?
