I'm no expert but I think it would make your diarrhoea worse!
A stabbing pain to the left side of the chest opposite the heart is usually reflux but it can spread across the upper chest area. Milder bouts can be like indigestion.
I have been on it for 6 years and never had any problems with it. Found I could eat anything I wanted without a flair up or reflux, while taking it full time. The down side is it can destroy kidney function and needs to be monitored if you are CKD.
I now only use it only when I get reflux or IBS flair ups, otherwise I try to stay off it for my kidney sake.
With dietary management and trying to handle the stress works for me, most of the time.
Slip off the diet and it is back into the Omeprazole to settle down the gut again.
Try it and see how you get on. Then you can form your own opinion based on actual experience.
Hi Cheyne,
I have recently been put on omeprazole 40 to help settle what we think is a bad attack of Gerd. I previously also had a bad attack of IBS, but never had Gerd before. I have been on them for a month and want to wean off them. I had extreme pain with the onset of Gerd...pain between shoulder blades and across chest. Did you have this pain? It has come back periodically during this month but not quite as bad (I also have huge spasms at first)
Is this your experience too with pain? Will it all come back once I have come off omeprazole. How did you wean of them? Would be so glad of feedback as it is a lonely time. Thank you.
Hi,
I too wondered whether gallstones might be causing the pain you describe.
The pain from gallstones is usually duller, more intense and much higher than IBS pain.
When I had my gall bladder removed I was prescribed omeprazole for acid reflux, as it was discovered that I also had a hiatus hernia.
Fortunately, I found that I can manage the hiatus hernia through diet and exercises, so I stopped taking the omeprazole.
I do have diagnosed IBS by the way, so am aware of the sharp ‘cramping’ pain it causes.
Hope that helps.
Hi I think you need to get checked out for gallstones. The pain and symptoms you describe sound exactly like I had when I has gallstones. I had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago in August. Makes a huge difference
The answer is yes, it can help - it’s past of the Proton-pump inhibitor range which reduces the amount of acid that your stomach makes. And the same is true of any of the ‘prazole range’ of drugs. Sounds like you’ve been diagnosed with reflux, which can be very painful and uncomfortable. Read the side-effects blurb as I’m pretty sure diarrhoea is one, although if I remember rightly, it was only 1% of people that may get it. If it doesn’t work (give it a chance though) go back to your doctors as there are other options such as Histamine H2 receptor antagonist that also inhibit the production of stomach acid protection. Good luck, hope the drugs work.
