Best probiotic?

What’s the best probiotic for IBS D and bloating? I see so many and so much conflicting info and brands like Symprove and Livespo are so expensive so don’t want to waste more money on things that don’t work. I’ve had IBS for over 30 years and whilst generally well managed it’s been worse lately.

Try an L-glutamine supplement for about two weeks first, then work in a probiotic. Dr Mercola has good quality ones.

He’s a naturopathic doctor who has become quite famous for his research he’s done on the gut.

Good morning I have used Holland and Barrett Acidophilus non dairy plus. It works really well for me, but I did get a little worse for a few days before I got better. I have been taking it for nearly 4 year's now and 8ts excellent stuff. Xx

I’ve been using a brand called optibac - specifically the saccharomyces boulardii tablets. I’ve suffered with IBS D for about 15 years now and this is the only thing that takes the edge off! It hasn’t cured it by all means but I can at least take one before each meal and not feel like my intestines are about to explode immediately. Got them from amazon and 40 tablets was about £15

Alflorex has really helped me and has been scientifically studied for IBS. To avoid wasting too much money you could join theibsnetwork.org for a year for £24 and then you can get 2 month's worth of Alflorex for free. 2 months should be enough to test whether it is helping you. You can also buy 3 months at a time to get it the cheapest price per month. In the mean time you can get free help from specialists in IBS from the theibsnetwork.org and also lots of helpful advice, tips and recipes.

Thank you! I’ve tried the ones others have suggested so it seems to be between symprove and alflorex so happy to give this one a try as it’s cheaper.

Yes, I joined theibsnetwork.org for a year, in order to get 2 months worth of Alflorex for free. But they don't actually send the Alflorex in your welcome pack! Instead, they send you a letter with a link to the precisionbiotics website (which is not easy to copy from a printed letter) and a claim code. And they only sent me one month's free supply of Alflorex? So I may just as well have purchased the Alflorex from Amazon for the same price :-/

I took Bimuno prebiotic, which I get from Amazon, for a month before I received the Alflorex and since then I have been taking both, as someone said it was good to do so - and my IBS seems to pretty much subsided (fingers crossed). In fact, I have been eating ordinary Best of Both bread for the past 3-4 days with no unpleasant side effects ;-)

That's good news oldfog. Precision Biotics send you the first month initially. They then send you an email to ask you to contact them by phone to give them an update about how you are getting on with it. If it is helping or you have no side effects they send you the second month for free - they don't automatically send you the second month. If I were you I would contact them on ask@precisionbiotics.com, explain to them that you didn't get your second month and you'd like it to be sent to you. You are entitled to it according to their deal. They may just ask you some questions about how/if you symptoms have improved first.

Thanks for the heads up and the email address xjrs! I've just checked my emails and notice that my first month's supply of Alflorex was not shipped until 28 May - so the next month's is not due for another 10 or 11 days.

Hi, I have recently done a microbiome test and it has come back stating my biome is in a pretty good state. I have never had any luck with pro or prebiotics, perhaps the reason for that is, there's nothing wrong with it!

Interesting! Can I ask where you were tested and how they test for it?

It was an Atlas Microbiome test which I got via Chuckling Goat (they sell kefir amongst other things). If you get the test from Atlas it costs £149 but if you buy it from Chuckling Goat it's £129.95 and you get a telephone call for about an hour explaining it. It's a stool test by the way. After having the telephone conversation with the young girl from Chuckling Goat I was a bit concerned that she was just talking from a script, so this week I had a zoom meeting with a Nutrionist I know from a support group I used to belong to, and she has put my mind at rest that in fact my microbiome is in pretty good shape, especially since my diet it not the best! If you want any more information just ask. Maureen

For a probiotic, I've been using this from Microbiome+ (they offer a great deal now microbiomeplus.com/collecti.... I was taking this pretty much every day to start, but it probably more like 4 times a week now. I've also been taking about a 1/2 a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar most nights. I'm not sure if it's one or the other or both, or something else that I just lucked into, but I feel great.
