In what way did the slippery elm make your IBS worse? Are you IBS (D) or (C)? I saw an article about slippery elm a couple of weeks ago and added it to my list of things to try. I hope you don't mind me asking.

I am mainly IBS D, its the D that got worse. I've tried many remedies is 30yrs and diets and so far enterosgel has been the best

Thank you so much for replying, I think I might give the slippery elm a miss then. I used to be IBS(D) but am more in the middle of the two now, guess that would be IBS (A) or (M), so I guess I don't want to go back to D so I'll give it a miss. I did try silicolgel a few years ago but that made me constipated! Can't win with IBS can you.

I think you have to get the dosage right when I did the 4 week initial period I found 3 times a day too much do reduced it to 2. I now have a maintenance dose of 1 spoon a day in water in the morning. I've had very little acid reflux and have even come off the tablets and also no longer take mebeverine. I've travelled a few times too without having any loperamide!!

I'm not sure if silicol gel is exactly the same? Enterosgel isn't cheap but I'm prepared to pay the price for the sake of my health. I just look for people selling it or offers

I can't remember how much I took now but it would have only been a small amount as I have massive reactions to things. So if it said three times a day, I would only take one dose initially to see what reaction I had. I think in the case of this I took half or a quarter of a teaspoon, but knew straight away the next morning that it was not for me.

Couldn't stomach slippery elm, but found that not eating wheat based products really helped. Yes, I'll eat a sandwich if there's nothing else available but then pass me the Gaviscon or omeprasol! I also found that drinking mint tea with hemp really helped calm things down too.

Don't eat after 7pm in the evening

I found slippery elm to be very soothing on my stomach (I have IBS-C) and have a delicious recipe for it. I used to eat it as a snack whether or not i had an upset stomach. I had to stop as it can interfere with the absorption of my thyroid meds due to the fact that it lines the stomach so well.

Recipe:

Place 1-2 tablespoons of slippery elm inner bark powder in a blender with 1/4 teaspoon of powdered stevia, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 250ml of almond milk (or milk you can tolerate) - blend until smooth.

Then, pour the mixture into a small saucepan, and using low heat, bring the mixture to a simmer while stirring constantly until it thickens to the consistency of soft porridge. Remove from the head, spoon into a bowl and eat immediately.

This recipe is from Lee Holmes' book called "Heal Your Gut".

If i recall correctly, I used to drop in some tolerated fruit - like strawberries or blueberries. Yummy!

I hope it helps and that you enjoy it.

That sounds nice - I was told to add mine to a glass of water...

Yeah, nah...not tasty. The recipe I shared above was bloody yummy. And you could build on that. Add cocao powder or swap the stevia to a dash of maple syrup. There are endless possibilities.
