Hiatus hernia

I was diagnosed many years ago with having a hiatus hernia after an endoscopy to sort out bad indigestion but with no HP infection. I wonder does this contribute to IBS? I was diagnosed as having a spastic colon a couple of times in the past and my GP said it was all stress related - I do suffer from severe anxiety.

Hi, I've had IBS over 30 years but when it started it was always below my waist but over the years, especially as I have got older, it seems to have traveled up through my body so I now have GERD type symptoms as well. I am guessing if it can do that, it could do the same in reverse, but I'm no expert.

Hi thanks for replying I think I may also have a food intolerance as well now and that can cause similar symptoms to ibs all I know is I'm heartily sick of watching what I eat and drink

Hi I have had IBS attacks (rather than chronic) most of my life, and many years ago after an endoscopy I was told I had a hiaitus hernia - but never had any symptoms from it, until recently when it may have been disturbed by some physiotherapy. I would say that anxiety is probably the main factor in my IBS. Apparently far more people have a hiatus hernia than was before realised, and in most cases they are so mild they don't cause symptoms.

Sadly whatever you have it tends to get worse as you get older :-( And there really isn't any fix for these conditions.

I would now say to anyone who knows they have a hiatus hernia - be aware that any kind of chiropractic or physio which requires a torso twist can cause other problems, such as unsealing a quiet hiaitus hernia ...

Hi that's a good point about physio as I have chiropractic for a bad back might be worth giving it a miss for a while and see what happens. I've always had problems with my hernia even as a teenager, I would bend over and either food or stomach acid would come up!! I have to stay slim as if I put any significant weight on it gets worse. Ah well, at least we're not alone - thank you for your reply if really is appreciated
