Your gastroenterologist can do this test. It's not invasive, but I think it does have to be done in a hospital.

I am in the US, so am not familiar with these names. I have a friend who had the test and from what I understand it takes several hours but is basically a breath test of some type. I think you would need a prescription for it.

LCat in reply to b1b1b1

You certainly don’t need a prescription in the UK as it is non invasive

No not true .... it can be done in the hospital but it also can be done at home. The GI Consultant doesn’t do it himself in his hospital but will refer you to Clinic where they are specialised in breath tests.

Do you mean getting a breath test? I’ve had that done at my local practice - checking for h pylori. Is that what you mean? X

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to weegmack

No it is breath test for small intestine bacterial overgrowth you know where to check it it’s called SIBO in short cut

weegmack profile image
weegmack in reply to Ari3

Ah ok. Are you in a hurry to get it done? Totally understand if you are - NHS are so very slow 😡

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to weegmack

Does Nhs do it as well and can my gp order it or I must ask for referral and again wait three month?

weegmack profile image
weegmack in reply to Ari3

Phone your surgery and ask them before you make an appointment- I don’t see why the gastro or your practice nurse wouldn’t do it. It’s non-invasive. Xx

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to weegmack

What is non -invasive? I am very very sceptical that in uk doctors do this test

weegmack profile image
weegmack in reply to Ari3

Non-invasive means that it’s not anything that’s surgical or going into your body, if that makes sense? I’ve just had a look online, and you’re right, it isn’t offered on the NHS. The test I had was looking for an overgrowth of H-Pylori in my stomach, which can cause stomach ulcers.

I’m always sceptical of things I see online - I would definitely ask the GP about it, before you apply for any tests online.

Are you wanting SIBO to test for IBS? Xx

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to weegmack

Basically my nutritionist suggested me to do that test but it’s £330 which is way too expensive I wanted something cheaper maybe some labs offer or something

I did it at home with ‘The Functional Gut Clinic’. I had to do it again this year. It was £350 if you go into the Clinic but only £200.- if you do it at home and send it back to them.

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to LCat

Did you pay £200 for both SIBO tests? Which clinic is this please ?

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to Ari3

Ari3, I just looked it up again ... sorry I paid £ 250.- for doing it at home. The Clinic is called ‘The Functional Gut Clinic’. I already gave you the address : 22 Upper Wimpole Street, London W1G 6NB, phone 0207 486 4777. I don’t understand what you mean by ‘Both SIBO tests’.... The Clinic does several breath tests for different purposes. But there is only 1 test for SIBO (which costs £ 250.- ) The other breath tests are for other purposes (not for SIBO). You have to get instructions from them as to how to go on a certain diet a few days before the test. You MUST do this exactly as they say ... otherwise you waste your money as the results would be incorrect. They may ask you whether you want the Lactulose test or Glucose test .... but almost everybody does the Lactulose test as it covers a larger area in your intestines. (Glucose test is only rarely used .... when Consultants ask for it after an operation etc). So for you it’s the Lactulose SIBO year which costs £250.-

LCat in reply to weegmack

Extremely unlikely as you need a whole lot of highly specialised equipment... it needs a specialised clinic. Also SIBO is still a sort of ‘controversial’ subject with the GPS. GO Consultants don’t find it controversial but many GPs still do...

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to weegmack

This is something totally different : one thing is a breath test for H Pylori and the other is a breath test testing for SIBO

If you’re in the UK : The Functional Gut Clinic in London, UK. (I can only tell you for the UK). I think they have also one in Manchester. My GI Consultant asked me to go there to the one in London. You can do it privately without referral . Since this year you can also do it from home. They send you the kit and instructions and you send it back by post. It’s also costs less when you do it from home (plus you save the travel cost). Also easy to do...

Iam from uk yes could you send me their details please or pm me so I can get in touch with them thank you so much

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to Ari3

I’ll try to send it the next post : if it gets rejected then just google ‘the Functional Gut Clinic’ in London and it will come up. You have to go on a specific diet the day (or a few days before). I’ll send it now

When I looked it up trying to find it again for you, to my surprise I noticed that there are now others doing it as well and with them it costs more if you do it at home (strange)

I ment two SIBO tests were two breath tests first shows if u have SIBO and another one shows where is bacteria infested and what kind of bacteria

LCat profile image
LCat in reply to Ari3

This Clinic is specialised for breath tests. If you do the SIBO breath test in this Clinic, and if you take the Lactulose option ( which is the better option), you get a report afterwards which will give you an idea where the (bacterial) problem in your intestine is , I e duodenum, caecum etc ... wherever they find a large amount of bacteria. However this test cannot check exactly which type of bacteria is involved. Not to forget we’re talking here about the small intestine that’s was SIBO is testing. I understand, if you want an in-depth analysis of any bad undesirable bacteria in the large intestine (Helicobacter Pylori, Campylobacter, salmonella, E. coli etc etc.) then you would do the comprehensive stool test. I had this done in another specialised clinic.

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to LCat

I have found one and it is £318 both SIBO breath tests.one shows u if u have or don’t have SIBO and second one shows where exactly it sits the bacteria overgrowth which part of small intestine and what exactly bacteria it is .

I had the SIBO Lactulose Breath Test done privately at my local NHS hospital. The cost was £79 and there was no wait. No doubt private clinics can charge what they like. As with any specialist testing in the NHS you have to have the referral from a doctor I'm afraid, even when you go privately.

Oh really .... that’s interesting ....which hospital was that ??

I found a functional nutritionist and she ordered a SIBO breath test the kit came in the post and I did it at home then sent it off to be tested, I also did a comprehensive stool test at home. So I would recommend you find someone in your area that can help you good luck.

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to Moijoy

I have nutritionist but it cost £330 both tests I’m wondering if there is anything cheaper

Moijoy profile image
Moijoy in reply to Ari3

You might have to shop around mine came to roughly the same as that for both tests, you might find someone that would just do the tests for you, I know when I was looking for someone, one offered to do just the tests as her fees were out of my reach. Just a thought.

I went to a naturopath Dr. The sibo test was just a breath test o did at home. I had to eat a special diet for a day or two before it consisted of white rice , white bread and chicken stock. It was easy and cost 165.00 my insurance didn't cover it.

Ari3 profile image
Ari3 in reply to Frillylili

Did it include both tests or one test?

Frillylili profile image
Frillylili in reply to Ari3

Just the breath test. I know there are others that can be done, but the breath test alone can determine if SIBO is present.

Smart Nutrition (UK based) offer a range of tests (including SIBO). The SIBO is £165.00 and you don't need a GP referral. But I've not used them so can't recommend the service. Also not sure if this covers both tests (methane and hydrogen?). Perhaps worth contacting them as could be a cost saving over some mentioned above...

Whereabouts do you live Ari ? I have had the lactulose breath test for SIBO twice this year and malabsorption tests for both lactose and fructose, all on the NHS. This was in Dorset and there was a wait of around two months each time though.

Ok I have no idea if it is available in your area or not but it might be worth you enquiring. I know that waiting for an appointment is a pain when you just want to find out and get some sort of treatment going but if you then need re-testing it could get quite expensive !
