By eliminating other things, usually through a colonoscopy or any other tests he thinks are relevant, and by asking you a lot of questions about bathroom issues etc.

Where my pain was, when it started etc. Loads of lifestyle questions, I was in a very stressful job and I think stress was my first trigger, then it was a visit to a specialist who had a look around inside using s9mething sort of instrument and recommended a barium enema. Think I maybe had blood tests although I’m not 100% sure on that though. I remember the barium enema though. All possible nasties were eliminated and it was decided that I had IBS. None of it hurt and it was worth it for peace of mind.

Just by listening to symptoms. My consultant said no tests necessary as mine is classic text book IBS! Advice given and referred to dietician. That was 5th June. Still waiting although not that bothered as I've learned about managing the symptoms myself .
