I hate having IBS when im at a friends house. I had an episode before, you'll know what i mean. An explosive one at my friends house. Felt so embarassed. Sat there having a coffee and was like oh ive gone shakey, i need the loo.

I have mebeverine to take but try not too as it cloggs me up! I drink peppermint tea a lot to help. Whats your holistic remedy for your IBS?

Hi there, god know how this feels - especially at work :( yep or trying to date and that dreaded first night of sleeping over naked with someone! I can't take mebeverine as it makes me like lose my mind, makes me feel really loopy and high and hallucinate. It's horrid! Peppermint tea sounds good, I think generally sleeping after an episode, resting, chilling out. I like listening to ASMR, things that take your mind off it and relax you. I like having plain food where I can like white bread sandwiches, rice, bananas, things that I know aren't complex with garlic paste, onion powder, sodium etc. loads of other random ingredients that set me off in them...not sure I've really worked out a therapy.

None of my friends understand it either. I find that when I start getting tummy cramps sipping on peppermint tea and taking buscopan helps. I stopped taking mebeverine because it didn't help me. I'm a stay at home mum so luckily when I have an episode I'm normally home and can let it run its course but a hot water bottle and sofa rest can help a lot!

Coffee is a common IBS trigger so I would try not drinking it when you're out.

in reply to MsRivet

I find coffee sets me off as well but have no trouble with black tea

I stick to decaf when i do have coffee. I hate tea without milk and i am milk intolerant and soya is rank ha

in reply to CSmidge

I don't like soya milk either!

I find peppermint tea is very soothing and also the capsules and imodium are helpful and look at your gut playing up as an alarm signal and ask yourself are you doing too much and is there anything you can postpone or eliminate to make things easier as small changes make a big difference and if you need the bathroom just go and use it when you need to.

Coffee would be my worse nightmare, had to give it up, I eat as clean as I can, I know if I have certain foods I’ll suffer and they’re usually bad foods, I’ve cut out tea and coffee and just drink herbals and plain water during the day, gin and tonic is my ‘go to’ going out drink, I’ve heard clear spirits are the best. It’s really about determining what triggers you off, I’ve also taken charcoal tablets to get rid of gas and toxins which helps when you feel you’ve had too much of something which is making your stomach react, digestive enzymes are great too but that’s quite s big commitment everyday. but at the moment I’m just taking Alflorex probiotic, my bloating, gas and totally unpredictable bowel movements have all stopped, it’s a godsend. The first couple of days my stomach wasn’t very happy on them and I was concerned about sudden bowel movements at work so I’ve started taking them before I go to bed rather than first thing and so far so good. You only need one a day
