After years of having IBS I recently got an appointment with a specialist who said I have Disfunctional Gut Disorder and told me take Citalopram 10mg. I am not keen on taking them and would welcome some advice from anyone who has or is taking them for IBS or DGD. My symptoms are worse when my period is due.

Have I got it wrong, or are Citalopram tablets for depression or anxiety? Is your GP saying that this is causing your IBS?

Citalopram is an antidepressant. I was put on amitriptyline 10mg, which is also an antidepressant, but it wasn't to treat depression. In small doses it works on the nerve endings to help with pain relief. It works by dulling the pain sensors somehow. It made me a bit tired to start with but it helped a lot! I'm a bit better now so I've come off the amitriptyline, but my GP has assured me that I can use it again if I need it. There are probably people on this forum who have much more experience of these things than me, so I'm sure when they see your post they will reassure you. I hope this is helpful!
Hi Hampton,I've had IBS for around 10-12yrs now,so they say.Ive seen many specialist, and what Peter has told you is exactly right. IBS is a syndrome which can mean many things ,they use the phrase IBS because it's easier.
DGD,means the same as IBS in a way,it's really just a way of giving you an answer.
I've had that same diagnosis, which means,"can't do much for you"
Sorry to sound so blunt but I've been through it all,I'm now with the top man in the country and I don't think he can help. Good Luck
I take Citalopram for anxiety and depression and have had IBS/collick all mu life, doctors called it abdominal migraines in my childhood. I am not sure if it helps as I still have the IBS problems , usually I ease them by following fodmap plan for eating but sometimes like today I have been stuck on the loo all day in pain and well you know how it is, it's always worse in warm weather.
I don't want to sound negative, I am just giving my personal experience. I take 20mg of Escitalopram and 20mg of Amitriptyline. I have IBS-D with daily diarrhoea and both of these medications have failed to give me any improvement. I have now asked my GP to refer me to a dietician to try to get to the root of the problem. I am taking Immodium daily now but I feel this is just plastering over the problem.
Hi Hampton, My doctor put me on citalopram in February for anxiety/ IBS . I found it didn't really help with my mood but I had quite a bad reaction with physical symptoms. Feeling dizzy, sick, anxious and other things. I read lots of reviews and plenty of people seem to get on well with them but some don't. Everyone is different and I should say give it a go. Good luck x
Hi Hampson, I have been prescribed Citalopram by my doctor today, after I spoke to him about the social anxiety that I suffer in certain situations due to my ibs. Having read through the accompanying leaflet, I'm not sure now that I want to risk taking them. How did you you get on with Citalopram?
