Has anyone got any information on probiotics? I want to try them after reading good things on here but am unsure where to start looking and what I should be looking for, thanks
Good quality probiotic?: Has anyone got any... - IBS Network
Good quality probiotic?
I don't know if this will help. But we find that something as simple as actimel works on a daily basis. Of course it doesn't help greatly during attack but does seem to make attacks less frequent.
Have you tried VSL my niece had to take it for colitis and suggested I took some for my IBS found it helped if only taken a couple of times a week to begin with until tummy settled down. Full of live good bacteria ! Hope this helps can buy on line cheaper.
I have been so much better since I took a probiotic. I no longer expect tummy upsets so you can see there is a big improvement. I buy my tablets from Healthspan. They are online or you can telephone them on a freephone number. I initially bought the most expensive one but there was such an improvement, I bought the cheaper ones.
I'm about to try Symprove, got it a while ago but then had a bad bout & didn't want to try anything new till I was on a good streak again! It seems expensive but if it works it will b worth it, says to give it 3 month so I'll let you know outcome
Thanks everyone I will definitely look into this more, coppertop - you sound exactly like me I have to be as near to feeling healthy as possible to try anything new.
I have tried various high strength probiotics but can't say I noticed any difference. Once thing to bear in mind is that most are destroyed by stomach acid, so (apparently) enteric coated probiotics are better as the capsule passes through the stomach undigested and only dissolves when it reaches the gut. I also read that a particular strain called B.Infantis helps some people with IBS. Apparently babies are born with a high concentration but as we get older, the amount reduces. I searched high & low to find something that was enteric coated AND contains B.Infantis - most of them are American products. The one I tried is called Mightidophilus (made by Solaray) but I can't honestly say I noticed any difference. A few weeks ago I saw that there is now an high strength version. The ones I took were 10 Billion. They are quite reasonably priced (about £8 for 30) so might be worth a try. I have just seen a product on Amazon called Align, which is B.Infantis with no other strains of probiotic. It is expensive and I don't know how it compares to the amount found in Mightidophilus. I tried other probiotics costing up to £35 without any improvement, so as much as I would like them to help, I am becoming a bit jaded. I have been tempted to try VSL mentioned on this thread but at £57 for a months supply...
