After being diagnosed with IBS-D has anyone lo... - IBS Network
After being diagnosed with IBS-D has anyone lost weight, because of diet change.
The short answer-no. Bloated all the time and weigh more than ever
Great, lol. Only just been diagnosed and really finding it hard with what to eat. Some days great other days really bad and bloated, like today and yesterday.
Yes definitely. I've been on the low-FODMAP diet for 6 months now and with a fair bit of tweaking have got it to work amazingly well. However, I had great difficulty initially in keeping my weight up - mainly because I was afraid to eat very much at all. I found that increasing potato intake and pasta (made from corn) stabilised things and my weight is now very stable.
Glad things are working well for you. Not totally clear about FODMAP diet.Do I need to speak to my GP.
Hi Sharon,
Yes, you need to ask your GP for a referral to a dietitian in order to get the English food info for this diet.
In the meantime you can try giving it a go yourself by going to: monash.edu.au (where the diet was first developed) and entering FODMAP into the homepage search box. It works for a lot of people on this site, but I think we've all had to adjust it a bit to suit our own personal needs. For instance, it worked much better for me once I realised that I couldn't eat any grains, including rice, and just stuck to corn (maize). There are a few fruits on the 'safe' list too which don't do me any good at all.
There's a good iPhone app on the Monash web page too. Don't just Google FODMAPs though otherwise you'll end up with a load of outdated and just plain wrong info.

Thanks Pagan, all this info is great. Will look at this asap. Will let you know how I'm getting on.

Hi Sharon, I started myself on FODMAPS back in February as I couldn't take the pain anymore and did to want to wait for a referral ( which I go in April and I knew more than the dietician by then!).
Monash is a great place to start.
There are some previous posts on this site with details and food lists too.
It's definately worth starting the diet yourself.
I found that if I eat foods in the GALACTAN group then I am in agony but also I loose mega amount of weight instantly! Well over a week at least!
Also found that I cannot eat any types of sugar..the FODMAP diet says you can have refined, but even that gives me pain and other symptoms. So keep a food diary when you start and record any symptoms so that you are pinpoint the triggers.
Good luck
One other tip. As you are cutting out wheat, do read the labels on the gluten free range in stores if you get tempted to buy them, as some include fruit juices which you need to avoid at least in the beginning phase of the diet.
Hi ibsr,
Thanks for all your info and tips. I have already been on the monash website. I found it really interesting, I checked out the foods list. Going to give it a go asap. GP has refered me to a dietician, I am pretty sure that wont be any time soon. Need to start something had IBS-D since monday morning, pain got so bad yesterday GP sent me to hospital. Waiting there for 7 hours and came out with appointment for more tests and pain killers. Still in pain.
Thanks again,
Sharon.
Hi Sharon,
I've been on the low Fodmap diet and take symprove probiotic daily, the change in my diet and my symptoms have been amazing, instead of feeling like rubbish all the time, I only have a flare up every now and then, and I have lost 7 kilos to boot??, my IBS-D seem to be under controll now, which I can honestly say is the first time in 4 years.
Hope all turns out well for you
