I’m very worried with the actual Covid19 pandemia. Because my dad has chron’s disease since 2 years, and he took the tuberculine test and the results were positive. He went to the doctor, and he couldn’t receive the treatement for the tuberculine bacterya because could affect his Chron disease.

I want to know his risk to be sick of covid-19 and how severe could be the symthomps. This situation get me very anxious! Could anyone help me please?

The safest thing is for your father to stay at home as that greatly reduces his risk of getting Covid 19. It is also good if he does not have contact with people who are going in and out of the house.

I am not aware of TB drugs and how they affect Crohns. Perhaps the doctor thinks your father has latent (sleeping) TB and is weighing the risks/benefits of treatment.

Here is a link to the UK organisation for Crohns which has some helpful information.

Hi Mila0704,

I can understand this must be a particularly worrying time for you given your Father's condition. Our current understanding of this evolving situation is that latent TB itself does not make someone more vulnerable to covid-19, however your Father's Crohns disease would be considered a risk factor.

If he did fall ill with covid-19 it may be more likely that his latent TB will reactivate to become active TB, though again Crohn's is a risk factor for this already.

The best thing he can do is to adhere to government advice on shielding and to ensure he keeps on top of his medication and general lifestyle to stay as healthy as possible.

Best wishes,

Helen
