Going “Old School”

For the last four weeks I have been on a Non diet, after over 80% of my life being on a diet I am fed up with it. The truth of the matter is I have good eating habits and being on a diet sends me off the rails, so I am just keeping a food diary and I find it very satisfying physically writing it all down.

While I was out shopping in Saturday I came across the workout diary in a discount book shop, £3 for the book so I though why not do it for my Exercise. It has a strength section and a cardio section, it even has a food diary but I like my Pinch of Nom one,

Every month you can take a fitness test and see how you are progressing and take measurements.

For me this works brilliantly as the physical act of writhing down makes me more accountable so my just one thing this week will be to keep both my diaries. 😀.

I’m surprised at how much more connected I feel to a piece of paper rather than logging it all online 😀

Goodness. I would never keep a diary of anything. I have tried once or twice. A week or two is the beat I can manage. But I do know what you mean about paper. I have a sister who has scrapped her computer so I enjoy physically writing to her. It is different.

I grew up in 1950s England where food was still rationed until 1952 and was very very basic. Potatoes, onion, carrots and cabbage with a little meat mainly. We were perpetually hungry despite being adequately fed and very healthy. Then came the 1960s and we discovered stuff like red peppers and courgettes.

We also walked and bussed everywhere in those (not so) good old days. (But my mother, along with, I am sure, millions more, was bored witless by her life as a cook, cleaner and child minder.) The only fast food/ready meal was fish 'n chips. Yumm.

I have also never had a weight problem despite eating a lot. If anything I was usually a bit skinny. But I am not keen on cream, sugar, salt etc anyway so tend to eat healthily just because that is what I prefer. I never run anywhere unless I am late (which I was a lot in my youth) but love walking and used to do a lot of fell walking in the Pennines when I lived in the UK. (Have you ever met a fell runner? They are a class apart.)

I notice that my dogs never run much either once off the lead. They might run a few yards to the next smelly tuft of grass but unless a rabbit etc. takes their eye they just walk, but fast.

Now I live in Andalucia and the local veg shop has such a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, many of which are locally grown and seasonal, that life is just wonderful. Fresh local figs are sold just now and the cherries are coming in.

Plus there are hills everywhere so running isnt needed to get your cardio workout. Just spend a couple of hours walking the dogs up the nearest sierra.

Keep up the diary though especially on paper. It sounds therapeutic. Nice and relaxing way to wind down.

I am finding it fun. One of the sad things it has highlighted is that my writing form has taken a nose dive and part of what I would like to do is get back to nice neat writing. 😀.

Sounds like you have a great place to walk and keep fit, nothing like the outdoors for health 😀. Rfc x

Sounds good... and for me that would be a good privacy thing, nobody can ever read my scribble!

Something just feel good about writing it all down, more accountable with out obsession 😀.

Interesting....I also like recording runs and exercises. I use a diary and write down details of runs and use smiley face stickers on the days I do strength work 😉 When I have needed to do a strict diet (often after Christmas!) I have found writing down everything I eat and the calories, is the only way I can keep on track (it does get a bit obsessional though 😕).

Just one thing - I am still managing arm exercises a few times a week 😊. All the best to you

Well done on the arm exercises, you will be seeing the difference around now 😀.

It is really strange for me,I woke up one morning four weeks ago and thought, that’s it, I can’t diet any more in my life. My BMI is healthy, my hip to waist ratio is normal and all my health stats are within good ranges, why am I doing this to myself. Just for a little belly fat. (Or ab duvet as I prefer to call it 😀). I eat well, have five a day or more and don’t have processed foods very often. Since then I have lost 1.4 pounds and loved everything I have eaten with out feeling like I am on a diet, so no days off or bad foods, The best thing is it gives me a sense of freedom, it feels like when I gave up smoking, an over whelming sense of glad I’m not driven or controlled by that anymore.

The thing is, I know what good food is and I know when I am not eating it, it really is that simple for me 😀.
