Has anyone noticed that when it rains or is about to rain you experience more pain in your joints? Most of the time I can walk or work through the pain. Do others experience this same phenomenon? What do you do to deal with it? Sometimes I even take an ibuprofen but most of the time I work through it. Share what you do.

Rainy weather and joint pain?
The ability to reply to this post has been turned off.
I grew up in UK and remember lots of cold rainy days. People used to say that the cold rain made their joints ache and feel stiff generally, particularly chronic knee pain.
There is actually some science to do with this phenomenon. Load bearing joints such as knees and hips may be affected by reduced circulation during cold weather, because when it is cold (and rain makes you feel colder) your body conserves heat by keeping more blood in the organs in the middle of your body. Gentle exercise will actually help with this by ensuring circulation to your extremities. In fact, this is one of the great benefits of exercise generally that we don't talk about much, but increasing circulation every day has a lot of benefits.
The other aspect that is important is that chronic joint pain is closely linked to inflammation, and its the inflammatory activity that may make a painful joint swell up. Inflammation within the body seems to be worse in cold weather, it can exacerbate things like COPD and there is some evidence that cold weather exacerbates joint inflammation too.
And finally, you just might not feel like walking when its cold, so that reduced activity to make you feel stiff and sluggish
Just goes to show how important movement and activity is for healthy circulation and reducing chronic pain - and staying warm and energetic!
Oh my goodness, this information is so helpful and really helps to underscore the need for movement. I know that I usually feel better when I start to move around and worse when I sit still. Now with the science behind it I will be more inclined to keep moving. Really appreciate your knowledgeable and thoughtful response. Made my day so thank you.
