hi all

i have had trouble swallowing for about two weeks now,it feels like my saliva is too thick to swallow, then today i have started gagging, i know i should go to my gp but every time i go i get more pills and really dont want to be taking any more.

can anyone relate to this or do you think its not scleroderma related

Hi Llindylou.

Have you started on any new medication? I personally am so fed up with all the medication they keep prescribing, the latest one being Codeine Phosphate. I hate having to "try to go" to my GP. It's hard work getting an appointment and then hard work actually getting their. My condition is in my feet, which makes walking excruciating intense pain. Do you have a Rheumatologist? If so, see if you can get an appointment with him/her. I think it could "possibly" be the scleroderma - but hey I'm no specialist.

hi cardiff lady

my mum thinks the same as you , maybe i am clutching at straws, yes i have started mycophenolate about 4 months ago, like you with the pain thing i too have been given codeine but be careful as it really constipates me so only take it if really needed

Thanks.

I hope you manage to get it sorted but feel the Rheumatologist will help more than your GP.

Today was particularly bad for me :( so had half of a 30mg. Didn't help so took the other half and still sat here in intense pain. Yes I've heard it causes constipation, will see how I get on with it. The Pain Clinic prescribed 120 x 30mg, will see how I feel tomorrow if I need to take more. Last year I got to the stage of asking for the nerves to be cut to my feet or just amputate them. Grrrr I wish something would help with all the pain.

I find tinned sweet corn really helps if you do get constipated. I have fibrogel and laxido every day as well as mountains of fruit and still suffer with constipation.

The swallowing thing is one of the side effects of scleroderma. To do with the peristalsis in the oesophagus. I take motilium (domperidone) before every meal. If I don't take it for some reason I certainly know about it! I know taking tablets is a pain, but if it helps and makes life more comfortable, why not take them? Just be thankful medicine has advanced enough to help you.

I also have trouble sometimes swallowing. I am now waiting on a appointment coming through for a swallow test at the hospital. No idea what it is but as you said. Just more tablets to the list. I also have heart failure so take lots of tablets daily for this as well as now for raynauds. and Indigestion. Its never ending.good luck to U all x
