lip fillers and scleroderma

hello everyone,

I am booked in to get lip fillers as my mouth has really thinned over the last few years. When I spoke to the hospital they said they don’t recommend having them but haven’t given me the reasons why. Does anyone know if there are risks and has anyone had lip fillers with scleroderma? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I’m following this because I was wondering about this. My friend gets lip fat transfers - hasn’t had one since pandemic but is getting next one soon. I thought I’d ask my dermatologist about this end of month as she sees me for pre-cancerous sun damage affecting my lips. They have lost so much pigment and I have bad creases now. We will see what she says

Hi,I have mine done every six months for the last two years, highly recommend as I cant even use a straw to drink from with out it. Get at least 1ml other wise it will look like you have had nothing done after 2 weeks.

Normal lip fillers or fat from your body?

Normal filler, 1ml usually lasts 4-5 months.

Interesting to hear this as my wife just chose to have normal lip fillers , even though I asked her to consult with the hospital first. I too would be interested to learn why not. She has other minor botox also.

Hi I use fillers on my lips and have been for years, I have very thin lips, I tried all different types of fillers as well and so far it is ok although mine don’t last very long as it seems to disappear fast!

Never tried fat transfer

hi I have systemic scleroderma and have gotten my lips done before diagnosis and have continued after it has really helped maintain my lips I mean they are smaller than before but not as bad I’d say I get 1ml of versa 3-4 times a year. It doesn’t last as long as it used to but really helps preserve my lips.

Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm are fine with scleroderma (not contraindicated at all) but unfortunately they don’t last as long in us. We seem to metabolise it quicker than ‘healthy individuals’. This is not fully understood yet so unfortunately I found it cost prohibitive to carry on. Also I bruised horrendously each time but then I bruised horrendously anyway. I believe there is a study going on at the Royal Free using a combination of fat transfer and fillers to see if it’s more effective. There a good facebook page called scleroderma and cosmetic procedures (or something like that.)

Hello Maryc13 I was told this too by my consultant apparently more risk of scarring I have botox too but I have chosen that the benefits fo me out weigh the risks not that I am saying in anyway you should or shouldn't it is an individual choice for me I have known my aesthetic nurse a long time and trust her I only have 0.5 in my lip and she uses the smallest needle for my botox it is also worth mentioning my skn involvement is low as mine is more systemic and affects my liver bladder bowel swallow etc hope this helps xx
