Since starting taking this 3 wks ago I have a really sore throat my glands are swollen and I’ve had an upset stomach.

My blood pressure has been up and gp was useless and googled side effects but did not tell me to stop taking them and advised i contact rheum dept who have still not replied.

He believes it’s an infection of some sort. I feel so drained and my bones hurt, I constantly feel sick and upset tummy with pain right side and I’m so irritable.

Does anyone have any suggestions please

It sounds as if you have picked up a virus, and that perhaps it's just coincidental that you started the hydroxychloroquine at the same time. It's still worth double checking the insert with the side effects that come with each packet of tablets.

Hi there, Like you, when i first started taking hydrox i had several weeks of up and down illnesses and thought perhaps the meds were actually making me worse. I now realise that it is more likely that I was already just so run down.

However...Hydroxy CAN cause a period of tummy /digestive irritation and i suffered nausea esp at night. My doc gave me metoclopramide to combat the nausea and after fourteen weeks i feel so very much better! It has been a really long slow progress and at times i thought it wasn't working...but looking back I see a vast improvement.

Can you ask your GP for some anti nausea meds, I also take omeprazole to reduce stomach acid . Always take your hydroxy with food, not immediately before bed and finally..it is a known fact that many of us dont cope well with many generic brands of hydroxy. My doc was happy to write 'zenteva brand' on my script so that this doesnt cause a problem as Zenteva are same formula as the original Plaquenil which seems to be much easier on the tum. I hope you stick with the meds as it does need patience, and I hope you start to pick up soon.
