Hi i carry the autoimmune cell for scheloderma i get checked and asked questions once a year. I have had a mechanical heart valve for 3 yrs now, but i have bern getting pains in legs put on weight and i have raynauds now. So last time i was at cardiology they ran bloods! Heard nothing in two wks so thought must be ok? Then i get a letter in saying to get thyroid nuclear scan and attend endocrine dept. So anyway went for scan yesterday and then was told needed to get ultasound to. I asked the doctor what it was all for he said what have you been told? I said its about my thyroid he said yes then nothing!! At the end i asked so what you looking for he said this we dont know if your thyroid is under active over active its reall Scuwif!!! (Prob not spelt write) scuwif in scotland means all over the place! He then said so need to find out what causing it?? So now i am left thinking do i have thyroid tumour, cancer is scheloderma full blown can anybody relate to this or do you have any opinions on whats going on, also can you have scheloderma without skin condition? Any answers very welcome. Thank you. Pam

Hi there, I am not understanding what your comment 'Scleroderma is cancer fullblown' means?!? Scleroderma has nothing to do with cancer. Scleroderma is a very specific autoimmune condition that comes under the umbrella of connective tissue disorders which are treated by Rheumatologists. If you have issues with your thyroid gland then this has nothing to do with scleroderma. It is possible to have autoimmune hypothyroidism, and if your immune system is attacking your thyroid gland then this may account for the problems with thyroxine production which would lead to weight changes and issues with fatigue.

Regarding your comment about scleroderma without skin involvement...this would be rare, but possible. Most people have skin involvement but the degree to which this affects them will vary.

All my best

Lucy
