Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and plasma viscosity are blood tests that detect inflammation. These are useful tests to help diagnose and monitor the activity of certain diseases such as lupus and scleroderma.

If you have inflammation in a part of your body then extra protein is often released from the site of inflammation and circulates in the bloodstream. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and plasma viscosity (PV) blood tests are commonly used to detect this increase in protein, and so are markers of inflammation. I really wouldn't worry too much. I have scleroderma and get infections from time to time and my ESR rises but it usually goes down after a course of antibiotics. It is what is causing the infection which needs sorting but for most of us with these rheumatic diseases it is not serious especially if borderline. If you are still worried then go and talk to your doctor or get referred to a rheumatologist.

All the best
