I did a lot of research into travel insurance as I am traveling through the States later this year. The best I could find (in fact one of the only companies that would insure me) was Insurancemedical, an offshoot of Staysure although much cheaper than the parent company.

Thanks for these, I will look into them. I am from America so I travel back as much as possible. So I definitely need some insurance.

I used payingtoomuch.com when I travelled to America (from the UK) earlier this year. They came out a lot cheaper than other companies and I found some companies wouldn't cover me. Hope this helps and have a good trip.

I believe JD Travel Insurance Consultants are supposed to be good, and as they are consultants, they take your details and try various TI companies to see who will accept and who gives the best deal - and you don't have to go through the process umpteen times. I have not tried them myself, but am working up to it.

I generally get a bit freaked by TI as my late husband was killed on a holiday, and I've had some weird experiences trying to get cover for a condition I'm labelled with, but don't actually have.

I'm even more wary at the moment, as I gather the legislation has changed since last year. It's supposed to be to protect the consumer from the lack of and/or confusing information on the various TI companies' websites, but it may mean that companies will be more wary. However, so far in my reconnaissance, I have not found that they are being any clearer. EG: I've found that there can be a huge discrepancy between the medical conditions that their medical questions suggest you have to disclose (eg: past two years, medication, serious things like heart/cancer etc.) and their 'definitions' section, where the pre-existing medical conditions you are supposed to declare are almost defined as 'anything, ever'. I am tempted to get a full copy of my entire medical record and start listing all my childhood illnesses, but don't want to alienate them too much (my speciality).

I got insurance for my elderly parents to travel for a month to the middle east and both had lots of health problems including stens etc and SAGA came up best, but turned out they were needed and can only say SAGE were amazing, highly recommend

Thanks for all the ideas, I checked into many and read all the fine print. And based on price and cover I went with Freedom Insurance. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed I won't need to use it. But if so I hope they are all right.
