Morning troubles

Good morning all,

My post is more so about the waking up after sleeping. Every morning I wake with lower back ache on the left side. It’s not the worst pain I have ever felt just uncomfortable. Also I wake with a terrible dry mouth. Does any one have any advice or also experience the same?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Asherleymoco, it sounds like your mattress is the cause of your back ache. You need a supportive one. This is not a firm one but could be a medium or soft one it all depends on your weight. If you are over 15 stones you will need a firm one. If between 10-15 a medium one and under 10 a soft one. If your mouth is open or you are breathing through your mouth your mouth will be dry. If you are interested in a new mattress it is very difficult to get one you are going to be happy with for several years, so buy one with a replacement guarantee, that is one that you can use for one or two months and send it back if there is no improvement. If you and your partner are different weights some manufacturers can make each side a different firmness. Look at the videos on YouTube on John Ryland beds. These are made in Yorkshire and the staff will talk through any questions you have. I am a delighted owner of one and have had the bad back etc but am delighted with this new one! Should have done it years ago.

Pain in the morning is usually sleeping position. If you also have dry mouth are you perhaps sleeping with your mouth open on a poorly shaped or positioned pillow? Might not be the mattress. Might just be a simple need for a new pillow. Some need a very flat pillow and some do better propped up. Some need firm and some prefer squishy. Mostly it needs to keep your head and neck aligned to your body for whatever position you sleep in and your head from rolling into weird positions that will result in neck or back problems and potentially sleeping with your mouth open.

If your dry mouth has another cause then many of those causes can make otherwise unnoticed muscle or joint strain into actual discomfort. If you take any antihistamines or medications then the cause of dry mouth probably lies there and is less likely to be related. Otherwise, other causes gets too complicated to quickly figure out a likely answer to. It could be simple dehydration, low minerals, hormone changes from day to night..... Many of these things can also contribute to muscle stiffness, aches, or cramps along with dry mouth or thirst.
