Nocturia - Getting Up Multiple Times at Night to Pee

Nocturia can be a real pain! In more than way. Not only is your sleep disrupted, but the next day you are tired, foggy, grumpy, etc.

Nocturia can be caused by so many things. But just about all of them are things that can be managed with some help from your doctor. Together you need to figure out what is causing the #nocturia, and then you can work on solutions.

One of the easiest things to try to make sure you get all your liquids into you at least 4 hours before you go to bed. So if you go to bed around 10, try to make sure you have all your liquids down by 6 pm.

Medications, heart conditions, neurological conditions and other things can also get you up at night. With the help of an understanding and knowledgeable physician, you should be able to cut down those nighttime trips to the potty.

As we are learning, sleep is extremely important to all aspects of our health. We all need deep and restorative sleep in order for our health to be kept at its best, and for us to be able to function properly!

Thank you for this interesting post. In 2013 had an accident causing spinal injury, spasticity and double incontinence. Before that I used to have to get up for a pee about 5 times each night. I used to enjoy a hot drink and snack before going to bed. Another factor might have been that I slept naked. Maybe this kept my temperature a little lower. It was arousing in getting me up to pee so many times as well as in a more exciting way.

Since I became incontinent I have had a suprapubic catheter. I wear only an incontinence pad and fixation pants in bed. I have noticed that my overnight urine output at nearly two litres is about twice my daytime output. This is convenient in that my daytime leg bag holds only 750ml. It is emptied at about 9.30am, 5pm and 9pm when carers call. Perhaps the large overnight output reduces the risk of daytime problems of a full leg bag.

Indeed! Seems like this works out for you in a very positive way. But for those who are not using a leg bag or a nighttime collector ... this is really "bad news" getting up multiple times a night.
