hypercalcemia

My levels were just a little high, my Oncologist had me to stop my calcium supplement and Vit D and levels returned to nl.
hypercalcemia is a known problem when mbc emerges in the bone. This is because the breast cancer causes the immune system to secrete proteins that make certain bone cells called osteoclasts more active. Osteoclasts break down bone tissue, an important function in the life cycle of bones. Destruction of bone tissue can increase blood calcium levels. There are a few ways to address this…
an intravenous bisphosphonate, such as zoledronic acid (brand name: Reclast) or pamidronate (brand name: Aredia)
intravenous denosumab (brand names: Xgeva)
calcitonin, a hormone made by your thyroid gland that is also found in salmon; the medicine is also called calcitonin salmon and is given as an injection under the skin or into a muscle
I do the zoledronic infusions to make sure my bones don’t crumble…I had stopped for a few months and suffered a pathelogic fracture in pelvis. Hope this helps you! Best wishes!
how long have you been on the infusion? Have you had to take calcitonin? This was a good explanation as I have had parathyroid surgery after my initial bc.
I have been on zoledronic acid on and off for nearly 5 years…at some point I went from monthly to bimonthly…and after a six month stop I returned to monthly infusions. My cancer just needs this med to rebuild the bone, I never took calcitonin, but interestingly I eat salmon twice a week..just a natural inclination without ever knowing the implication😎best wishes.
I just had my first shot today of xgeva, my calcium serum was 12.9
Yes 12.9 is a little high. I’m at 9.5 and have managed to be in the normal range throughout my treatment but I’ve received the zoledronic acid throughout …so I hope the xgeva works for you ! Best wishes M
