I was at a "Dancing Queen" concert Saturday evening, and the (Canadian) group, Jeans & Classics, introduced this ABBA song by mentioning how it reminded them of the emotional support women give each other. I thought immediately of this forum! It is terrific how supportive many of you are...
"Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong / You're enchained by your own sorrow / In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow / How I hate to see you like this /There is no way you can deny it /I can see that you're oh so sad, so quiet /Chiquitita, tell me the truth /I'm a shoulder you can cry on /Your best friend, I'm the one you must rely on"
According to Wikipedia: "Chiquitita" proved to be one of ABBA's biggest hits. It was featured in a 1979 UNICEF charity event, the Music for UNICEF Concert, broadcast worldwide from the United Nations General Assembly. As a direct result of this event, ABBA donated half of all royalties from the song to UNICEF. ....This makes it ...one of the most famous charity songs ever. To this day, 50% of the proceeds from the song go to UNICEF in recognition of the "International Year of the Child" in 1979. In 2014, all ABBA members agreed on increasing their donation to 100% of all royalties from the song to UNICEF. As of 2021, the song's royalties have raised $4.8 million for the charity."

Wow! That is so awesome! I didn’t know that about “Chiquita” and ABBA. It is a wonderful encouragement. I agree that this forum has been a great source of emotional support.
That is wonderful! I did not know that about either the song or the group. I always liked ABBA's music, especially in the musical Mamma Mia. Learning about their charitable works makes me like this group even more! Thanks for sharing.
I cried when I read the words to this song! How right they/you are that this song is reminiscent of the emotional support women give each other and how supportive many of you are in this forum! I did not know about ABBA donating the proceeds, how wonderful! Thanks for sharing! 💞
Love ABBA music, now even more! Yes there are things only women can relate to when we choose to share, its a special sisterhood no man can ever understand! My husband has been great through the many trials and tribulations of our 35 yr marriage but I know if I'm working on something, his answer is always hire somebody to fix it now! Women understand that living life is a journey especially now with MBC.
I've always loved that song but wasn't aware of the charity connection, and I had never paid much attention to the lyrics. Thanks for sharing that info as it is now not just a great song, but a very meaningful one too. xo
