I am getting evaluated for Inteventional Radiology & Cementoplasty on my 2 fractures on my left acetabular pelvic bone caused by MBC. It is painful to walk & be active & I’ve read it can strengthen the bone, kill the cancer locally (if any is present) from the hot cement. It is outpatient, much quicker recovery time & will get me back to a more active lifestyle. I am going to get evaluated for it at MD Anderson in Houston. Anyone with experience in this area?
Thank you!

This sounds similar to a procedure I had, a vertibroplasty. Under a local, I lad medical grade cement placed in 6 spots on my spine to remove cancer spots& strengthen my back. It helped so much.
Yes, cement to the spine vertebrae is very common & proven successful. I’m glad yours worked!
Pelvic cement is less common because of all the blood vessels, intestines, nerves & hip joints, etc. that must be avoided. I only want someone to do it who has done it 50+ times if possible. ❤️🙏❤️
I have not had this myself, but in my 17 + years with MBC have heard of it and known women who have had it and done very well. I will not hesitate to have it myself if I need it or something like it. Sending healing thoughts and prayers to you.......
I haven't had it done either. I do have four pelvic fractures. I think they happened when I was attending an exercise program. So I am wondering if repairing is good or will it just cause more breaks. I would think since you are being offered this, it must be ok. Everyone is different, Wishing you well,
Hello…your situation reminds me of what I was being evaluated for a year ago right after my diagnosis. I was limping so badly because if extensive Mets to right ilium. The doctor up at Dartmouth Hitchcock was worried that it would break but radiation treatment and monthly infusions of Zometa saved the pelvic bone. I walk without a limp. I didn’t know that the cement would kill the cancer but it makes sense especially if they remove the cancer riddled bone and replace it with cement. What a miraculous intervention. Inspire of the “”incurable” nature of this disease there are so many interventions and treatments to keep us going. Good luck with your procedure and I hope you are given some bone building meds for the future 🙏
I just asked my Oncologist in Boston about this… wondering about preemptively getting cement so things won’t fracture… he said they would do it only when going in to fix up a fracture. Does anyone know if they will do to prevent a break?
I would say yes to the procedure. I had 3 breaks to the pelvis, both femurs and hip breaks from bone Mets Dec 2020. Cement was placed in hips, (rods in femurs) but nothing was done for pelvis breaks /Mets. The pelvis has rebroken twice in 6 months. The pain from the breaks I describe as Edward scissor hands grabbing my privates. If cementing was an option for me I would do it. Because of my Mets, the pelvic fractures start to heal then rebreak from something as simple as rolling over in bed. Also physical therapy has helped a lot after my surgery so make sure that is on your to do list. (My Pelvic breaks are not displaced)
Very helpful to know! Can you get SBRT on your pelvis bones? My MBC started April 2019 Dx. That killed my cancer only in the left acetabular quickly. Then I was given Xgeva for bone Mets for 2 years which they stopped last March. Now I’ve got this 2nd fracture. Wondering if I should have stayed on it??? The 2nd fracture in the anterior pubis Ramus could have occurred due to the weakened superior pubic Ramus from the initial fracture. I get another PET/CT scan tomorrow to see if any cancer is present. It hasn’t been for almost 2 years.
I don't know in regards to sbrt on pelvis. My cancer doctor did no treatment / prescriptions for my bone Mets. The ER orthopedic surgeon was the one who cemented every MET hole she had access to while implanting femur rods and pins into both hips.
That’s interesting. In April 2019, I started SBRT to the left pelvic acetabular then within weeks started IBrance/Faslodex/Xgeva for the cancer fighting & bone strengthening meds. Were your bone Mets caused from MBC? If so what type do you have? I’m over 95% ER+. ❤️🙏❤️
They never found any primary cancer or tumors in my body, just holes in all bones from waist down.. Since many breast cancer patients end up with bone Mets in their journey, it's the only survivors I can get much info/support with.
Such a good point. Instead I am going to my physical therapist to ask lots of questions about strengthening things around my Mets… and will just hope that Xgeva is doing its thing.
Good news! My PET/CT scan this week came back with no cancer lighting up “Radiological Remission” (consistent since Nov 2019). The fractured pelvic bones: Superior & Anterior Pubic Ramus are quite painful. Still going to MD Anderson’s Orthopedic Oncologist & Interventional Radiology team in early September to see what options they have to strengthen the bones & reduce the pain.
