Help with chronic pain.

Some months back my daughter bought me a copy of ‘The Way Out’ by Alan Gordon. It deals largely with managing chronic pain, in particular neuropathic pain: that is pain created by the brain. I had little idea that neuroplasticity was so common.

You may wonder what this has to do with RLS. I have to say the book has been a huge comfort to me in managing pain. The book is eye- opening and very easy to read. I have since bought an audio copy that I listen to on a regular basis.

If you suffer from pain, anxiety, worry, lack of sleep, irritation and all things associated with restless legs then you may well get a great deal of comfort from this book. I know I did. I recommend it to you.

I was really interested to read this as I’m currently working through Dr Schubiners book ‘Unlearn Your Pain’ for my long covid symptoms of chronic fatigue weakness and dizziness and other symptoms. He mentions Alan Gordon in the book.

After just a few weeks my symptoms are much improved - having had them for 20 months. I wasn’t leaving the house except for appointments, and really struggled with social interactions of any length. (I worked for years in Family Support so talking to people had been second nature to me.)

I am now managing much more activity and am training myself to ignore the dizziness and go for short walks, and hope to drive again soon. Understanding that this is Mind Body Syndrome is a real game changer.

I’m interested to know whether anyone has tried this for RLS- so far Schubiner has mentioned it once in the book as being on the list of Mind Body Syndromes.

I heard Dr Schubiner on Rangan chattergee podcast. It was really interesting. I'm waiting for the book from the library. Even just listening to him and what he says has helped, it gives you another perspective on pain

Hi both,

I’ve emailed Dr Schubiner to ask about using Mind Body techniques for RLS as I’m not sure if it fits- though the fact you’re finding it useful Lineker suggests that it does. Anything to calm the associated anxiety would be useful. But if it’s considered to be a Mind Body Syndrome it’s a game changer. I’ll post on here when 🤞I get a reply.

Marigold, do you have the name of the Rangan Chatterjee podcast? Was it on BBC Sounds or via internet?
