Has your doctor informed you about the consequences of taking Pramipexol? Some of the side effects include heightened sexuality, increased gambling, quite apart from others.
Also a certain eventual outcome will be a thing called augmentation which means the symptoms will spread to the whole body and the medication will fail to control the symptoms.
Getting off the Pramipexol will be horrendous.
At first this drug is magical, controlling the symptoms almost immediately. People rave about it on this site.
It may well cover you for 10 years happily. But also may only last 3 months.
That is a decision you will have to make.
But if your doctor has not gone through all of this with you, I would not be going back to him.
All the best.
Up to 70% of people will eventually suffer augmentation according to the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS which believe me you don't want because it can be hell to come off it and the longer you are on it, the harder it will be to come off it and the more likely your dopamine receptors will be damaged so that the now first line treatment for RLS gabapentin won't work. Check out the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS which discusses augmentation and the latest guidelines on RLS treatment. Https://mayoclinicproceedings.org/a...
Since you have bad tinnitus with pregabalin you might want to try switching to gabapentin. Although they are basically the same drug except you need to divide the doses, and the side effects are basically the same, some people find that the side effects that bother them on one don't bother them on the other. Multiply the pregabalin amount by 6 to get the correct dose. If you need more than 600 mg take the extra 4 hours before bedtime as it is not as well absorbed above 600 mg. If you need more than 1200 mg, take the extra 6 hours before bedtime. If you take magnesium, even in a multivitamin, don't take it within 3 hours of the gabapentin as it reduces the absorption of the gabapentin. If you take calcium don't take it within 2 hours for the same reason.
I was on pramipexole for one year, and the neurologist removed it from me, as augmentation set in. I would be cautious with the prescription; the current neurologist I see currently told me once on it and discontinue with it, the RLS stays with more vengeance than previously, as far as studies had indicated. I wish you the best.
Hi Avacadopol , there are varying feelings about Pamipexole on here but for me it is the only medication to keep my RLS at bay and I have chronic RLS . I have been taking them for years and have had no side effects !
I don;t know if it will help you decide, Avocadopal, but I have been on Pramipexole for about 7 years starting at half a tablet and now take 5 a day. They have always helped me with no side effects (fingers crossed) so can't complain but must say I am very aware that 6 is the limit and hope I can keep to 5. However, at 80, I hope that 5 or 6 tablets will 'see me through' if you see what I mean? As I have said in my first message, I am convinced that there is a direct correlation between needing to pee at night and the RLS starting as soon as I have urinated I can usually get back to sleep straight away BUT no-one else seems to agree on this. Good luck on your choice. Mustgonow
