Pregabalin and silent migraines

charlie1234567890 profile image

I've had migraines for almost 50 years. They got better after menopause, but now I'm getting silent migraines (aura with no severe pain). I'm wondering if the pregabalin for RLS is causing the silent migraines. They started a couple months after starting the pregabalin. I know the pregabalin causes blurred vision, but not sure if it causes an aura like an aura with a migraine.

Has anyone experienced silent migraines with pregabalin? Checking before my appointment with my doctor. Thanks.

Migraines are not a known side effect of pregabalin.

Thank you for your response. I also just read that pregabalin is sometimes used to prevent migraines so I guess I'll rule out that the pregabalin is causing them.

Hi Charlie - a few years ago I developed numbness in my lower cheek and jaw. GP treated me for trigeminal neuralgia (which it wasn’t) with gabapentin. I then started to have silent migraine, sometimes I got the aura up to 4 times a day. I had never had migraine before in my life. A neurologist said that he had had that happen to other patients who had started on gabapentin. Eventually I was seen at a Migraine Clinic in London and put on 75 mg aspirin daily which has worked very well at prevention. Good wishes

Did you stay on the gabapentin and take the aspirin in addition to that?

I stopped gabapentin straight away and just took the aspirin. Hope you get sorted ASAP. When I was having the frequent auras I couldn’t drive. They are also very upsetting. Good wishes

If you stop the pregabalin, do so very slowly to avoid withdrawal effects. It you do so you won't have any.

The pregabalin is working for my RLS so I don't want to stop it but I can't live with these auras either. My doctor is totally against any kind of opioids so my options for RLS are running out. I'm seriously thinking of stopping all drugs, start smoking cannabis and becoming a granny "pothead." Doctors are so frustrating!

You could either ask for a referral to a neurologist who might prescribe opioids or change doctors to find one that will prescribe opioids. Where do you live? I might be able to provide you with some names of doctors who are knowledgeable about RLS and who might prescribe opioids.

Thank you. I live in the USA, Traverse City, Michigan. The last neurologist I saw was horrible (Dr. Heather Lee), not understanding and tried to put me on ropinerole after i had already tried requip and mirapex.

Margaret L. Moen (231) 935-8889 is in Traverse City and is listed as a knowlegeable RLS doctor. When you call, ask if she would prescribe opioids if she felt they were needed for RLS.

Thank you, Sue!!
