While I and others typically have described RLS "discomfort" as a "creepy-crawly feeling," I have been among those who hasten to add: "that my discomfort is painful ...my legs sometimes feel as though they are burning ...and that they are on fire."
As it was my understanding that pain in the form of a "burning" sensation customarily was considered to be an indicator of nerve damage, I was surprised to read some earlier replies elsewhere that noted that the current "RLS Diagnostic Algorithm" did not include "burning" sensations. See, e.g., replies to SueJohnson's earlier post, subject: Pain. Oh well.
Fast forward. Several weeks ago, I visited my new general practice physician. She prescribed pregabalin, starting with a conservative dose that thereafter was increased gradually. I visited my new neurologist yesterday. Following a tweak to the GP's prescription that affected only the dosing schedule, I had one of the best night's sleep that I have had in months.
Some RLS medicines work for some people and not for others. For those whose RLS symptoms include pain that is evidenced by a "burning" sensation suggestive of nerve damage, pregabalin may be worth discussing with your doctor.
Yes, Pregabalin can be used for nerve pain. I did for 10 years. It can be quite effective but please be cautious of side effects such as insomnia, euphoria, agitation, anxiety(palpitations). From my experience and others I have spoken with, these don't tend to kick in until at least 150mg and only for some people.
please do some googling about B vitamins especially B1 plus nutritional yeast for anything nerve related, also in recent research by Derrick Lonsdale and Chandler Marrs
