I am prescribed 60mgs codiene at night along with other meds for my RLS. I am also prescribed codiene 15mgs up to 30mgs as required for the arthritis in spine from neck to base of spine.

The codeine is to lessen the discomfort caused by the RLS and the arthritis, is does nothing to address the cause which is inflammation, in the case of RLS inflammation of the nerves and in the case of arthritis inflammation of the joints. In most cases this inflammation is due to high levels of insulin which comes from eating to much carbohydrate especially refined carbohydrate as in processed foods like white flour and sugar. Inflammation is also caused by eating foods cooked in refined seed oils.

I am aware it dosen't have effect on condition. I am well researched of both conditions. Also a retired medical professional.

You may think that you're well researched but either you need more research or you need to join up the dots better if you haven't found a solution to your problems.

May not be the solution for everyone. I've cut out most carbs under 40 a day for over two years and noticed no effect on my RLS and actually made my neuropathy worse. It's definitely worth a try and works for some but many here have had no luck with anti inflammatory diets solving their RLS symptoms.

I use my codiene for osteoarthritis mostly, as I can't take Nsaids as attack my stomach. So codine at present, but not working as well as it was.

Thanks for your input Shaft1952. It is so good to hear different experiences, perspectives and ideas. We must always be respectful of all opinions and kind and gracious in this forum. Do you take the codeine alone or is it with a compound?

I take 1 or 2 15mgs 4 times a day as required for my osteoarthritis, and 60mgs codiene at night along with pregablin & pramipexole for my RLS

Why are you taking both pregabalin and pramipexole?

Shaft1952 profile image
Shaft1952 in reply toSueJohnson

Because that is what my nurologist prescribed as the RLS was not being controlled. And at present having loads of break throughs. Just waiting for the new drug being researched at present.

How much are you taking of each?

75 mgs pregablin 6pm 100mgs 10pm & 88 micograms pramipexole plus 60mgs codiene. Going through a bad patch at present. Hoping to get gp to test ferritin on Wednesday.

Normally pregabalin is not split in 2 doses as it is long lasting. You might want to discuss this with your doctor and ask why. Also it is usually taken 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. Pramipexole is a dopamine agonist and up to 70% of people will develop augmentation on it which believe me you don't want. Since they both treat RLS they are normally used only for refractory RLS. I would suggest you wean off the pramipexole and increase the pregabalin until you find a dose that controls your RLS. The maximum dose is 450 mg. According to the Mayo Updated Algorithm on RLS which I suggest you read and refer your doctor to or print out the relevant sections at Https://mayoclinicproceedings.org/a... "Most RLS patients require 1200 to 1800 mg of gabapentin daily." This translates to 200 mg to 300 mg of pregabalin. Also have you had your ferritin checked? Increasing it to 100 or more helps 60% of people with RLS.

It was originally split to 3 times a day it is not a GP who prescribes the medication. It is my nurologist who has a special interest in RLS and is involved with a lot of research. She is very good. She altered things because of my RLS & times I get it during day & night.

Do you take your pregabalin and codeine together at night? My reason for asking is there is a major interaction between these two drugs so wondering if you r ok and do not have any dangerous side effects!Which new drug are u referring to that is being researched for rls?

I am weaning off pramixerole and using 60mg codeine at around 4am to help me.

I have started 400mg gabapentin(as recommended on this forum) at bedtime.

I amhesitant to take gabapentin and codeine togetheras worried it may not be safe to do so.

Would be grateful for any advice please.

I know the side effects, but also on pramipexole, prescribed by my nurologist. She didn't say but said there are a couple but they need more research before she is prepared to prescribe them .

If u have symptoms during the day too and r taking pramixerole, u may have augmentation like I have.I am trying to wean off pramixerole (which was also prescribed by a neurologist)as it actually makes RLS worse !

Many RLS sufferers on this forum have had the same issue unfortunately.
