Hi, I note I replied to your previous post a couple of weeks ago and both Jools and myself asked you for more details of your situation.

Unfortuntately you didn't respond so we couldn't help.

I can anwer your current question however.

Yes I've taken pramipexole (mirapexin). I presume you've just started on this.

It does cause some side effects as you describe. However, the doctor who prescribed this to you appears to have failed to have warned you of the Major complications it causes.

These are called Impulse Control Disorder (ICD) and "dopaminergic augmentation".

ICD is a serious life changing condition which usually occurs as either compulsive gambling, compulsive shopping or hypersexuality.

Augmentation is a life changing condition with a significant worsening of symptoms. It is caused by taking a dopamine agonist (DA) drug such pramipexole, ropinirole or rotigotine.

I am on tablets for heart, warfarin i am on sofadol and inhaler for copd and asthma and 500mg magnesium supplements daily

Of the three DAs, pramipexole carries the worse risk of augmentation. Augmentation is Very common.

There's no predicting when any individual will start with augmentation. For me it was 4 years, some people longer, for some months only.

Statistics show that 7% of people taking 0.5 mg pramipexole 7% will suffer augmentation within the first year, 70% within 10 years and virtually 100% in 15.

Because of this DAs are now NOT recommended as a first treatment for RLS.

As you're suffering such side effects from the pramipexole, it would seem a good idea to stop taking it.

It could be a good idea to back to your doctor to discuss alternative medicines and other measures that could be taken to manage your RLS. "Could" because from the little you've written, I'm afraid your doctor appears clueless about how to manage RLS.

I could give you more detail about the management, if you were to answer a few questions. These are

Have you taken any other meds before for RLS?

Have you had blood tests for iron deficiency?

Are you taking any other medicines either prescribed or over the counter?

Do you have any inflammatory condition or allergies?

Do you have any circulatory problems?

Do you have any other long term medical condition?

Your answers will help me offer information relevant to you.

Hi Jasperbaby, I tried these a number of years ago, but like yourself found the benefits to be minimal and the side effects similar to your experience. ( I'm taking zero medication at present and feel happier that I don't have to worry about side effects etc)

Best of luck.
