take melatonin for sleep?
Yes. But be sure to only take a very small dose. Between 200 and 500 micrograms. The problem is that most commonly available doses are 2.5 milligramme.
I get mine from vitasunn on the internet.
They sell a liquid form - 2.5mg , but the dropper holds about 2.5mg ,so I just take a tenth of the dropper, about 0.5 cm.
You can experiment with the dosage.
Be warned that melatonin is a trigger for RLS, ironically, so you will have to experiment with that as well.
I find it useful to use for about 3 nights, then try to keep away from it for ,maybe ,a week.
At higher doses I find it leaves me disoriented the next day. At 300 much ,it is fine. Half hour before bed.
Good luck.
I have used it a fair amount. As Madlegs1 has said - the smaller dose seems to be more effective. I have used a 1mg sublingual and break that into 4 - so it's a 0.25mg. It does help with falling asleep. I've used 0.5 mg in teas and a 3mg time release. The larger doses including the 3mg time release leave me very groggy the next day.
I avoid melatonin like the plague. It was one of the first otc things I tried when my rls progressed to giving me insomnia. After taking the recomended dosage I my rls became many times worse than it have ever been moving from my legs only to my legs, back, shoulders, and arms. It left me wiggling my whole body for many hours instill it finely wore off.
