Waking suddenly after a few minutes of sleep every night

Knittingasweater profile image

My RLS symptoms begin around 8 pm, and worsen as I try to fall asleep in bed.I will doze off for what seems like only minutes , then awake again suddenly and my symptoms are worse , this is a routine that takes place every night. When I finally fall asleep the second time I will wake up to pee a couple hours later and symptoms are gone until the next night.Anybody else experience dozing off then waking suddenly with worse symptoms? Then they subside after the second sleep session?

Hi again, just to reassure you, as the pattern of symptoms you described in your earlier post are typical of RLS, so is this pattern you now describe.

RLS symptoms are often at their very worst at the point of falling asleep.

This may be partly because relaxing triggers symptoms and also neurotransmitters are changing at that time.

The circadian rhythm (about a day) of changes in dopamine levels is synchronised with your sleep-wake rhythm and dopamine may be at its lowest at the time you're most sleepy. RLS is worse when dopamine is at its lowest.

Double trouble, low dopamine and lying down relaxing.

Later in the night, dopamine levels will start rising again, so the issue won't be as bad. Generally speaking the levels of quite a few biochemicals are at their lowest at about 2 am, on average.

If your RLS gets worse , you may find that you don't manage to get to sleep at all. Also, this might last longer into the night.

When my RLS was at its worst, I could get really sleepy, but within seconds of lying down, wham! My legs would start kicking. This could last ALL night and during the day.

I'm afraid it's a normal part of RLS, nothing unusual.

I get relief if symptoms for about 15 minutes after an orgasm , it must be because my brain gets flooded with the dopamine it other wise lacks?

I am the same, pity I can't get the Mrs to help more with the relief campaign!

I find that my RLS is somehow linked to passing urine and if I have to go my legs go mad but emptying the bladder helps... until it starts to fill again :( I'd love to know the connection but as of yet am guessing at Vagus nerve involvement.

OMG I know exactly what you mean about having a pee eases things. I thought it was just coincidental but if it happens to you too maybe not.

It happens to a number of us so there is definitely something in it - good news, you aren't as weird as you thought :) :p

I dont know much about this but there is some hormone that your body produces when you sleep that tells your kidneys to stop making urine so your bladder doesn't fill until you wake up.

A friend had a child with a bed wetting problem and apparently this can be caused by the body being a bit slow to develop its supply of this hormone. It was apparently 100% effective and after aq few years the body caught up and its no longer required. Possibly it fades away a bit with age

I don't know about any side effects - it doesn't sound healthy to leave all that stuff in your blood but perhaps it doesn't matter.

It's just a tablet so no drama taking it.

Perhaps you could win a few nights sound sleep with this.

Thanks, I'll look into this.

I have just started using Magnesium L-Threonate recommended by a friend . After 3 nights it has helped. Although I had some very loose stool. I have pancreatitis so it’s hard to tell. Pramiprexole was my terror

What meds are you on, Knitting?

This is a typical pattern of no meds or too little meds or the wrong meds.

If you are not yet on any meds, it might be time to think of starting. No-one can endure this for long.

It is just awful, I commiserate.

Correct. Not on any meds at all , waiting for blood work currently

If you have never had meds, and the condition is slowly worsening, then it seems a typical pattern of RLS.

There comes a time when meds are just unavoidable - when you are getting too little sleep and cannot cope.

I hope you are having ferritin levels tested.
