My father had RLS, this was in the 60's and 70's that it went really bad. His Dr gave him Valium. He took it every night and it seemed to do the job.

Valium works well. My father took 2mg nightly for years. It's only now I recognize that he had rls.

It is addictive, so be careful.

Good luck.

We didn't call it RLS back then either. I only found out about it from the oldest sister recently. He took the one pill til he died at 81.

That's an interesting one - the addictiveness of Valium - that is. My uncle used Valium since age 14 for anxiety and panic attacks. He only used it when needed. When the shrinks decided it was addictive, he couldn't get it any more. So they put him on Prozac. He has tolerated it well, but the side effects sucked, both in the bed room and because it dulled his mind, while not being so effective for his problems. After years and years on the Prozac, I think I am starting to see cognitive decline. He swears Valium was not addictive for him. And likewise for myself. I have it for the RLS, but only take it when it is bad. I don't have any desire for it otherwise. And I have an addictive personality. Alcohol and smoking have been big obstacles for me in the past. I can only assume that the addictiveness of Valium is case-by-case for reasons that I don't know. I would be interested if anyone knows the hows and whys of that one.

I'm inclined to agree- I would much prefer to be taking valium rather than Prozac.

I could see no ill effects from my father taking valium long term. And it gave him a much better quality of life.

Cheers.

if people take the valium/clonazepam/opiods/opiates for medical reasons like anxiety,

RLS and all the rest your body will require what it needs. For me clonazepam 2mgs for 3 years did the job. Congress as usual over reacts like with the opiod epidemic...by going after the doctors. The amount of people that die from prescription medicine is less than 1% of all OD's. So instead of going after the DEA for not doing its job they go after the Medical Doctors. Pathetic at best. Now more folks that need pain medications are going to the streets and the amount of over dosages have gone up instead of down. Yeah great job congress. The Governor in Pennsylvania passed a law that all pharmacies sell over the counter medication that will bring you out of an overdose in seconds. All you have to do is spray it into your nose and you come out of the overdose to live another day. Sounds like a simple solution to a simple problem. Will our dysfunctional congress do that no...they would rather see us dead than alive. Or better yet throw us into jail. But hey we keep voting the same idiots into office.

Back to RLS...I started on clonazepam then severe cramps where whole leg was like a rock so valium and norco for extreme pain and now marijuana. I also use near infrared light where they have had some minimal success. I use hypnosis tapes.

Spinal shots no effect on RLS. Veins collapsed which help greatly with the cramping of

the legs. Not much for RLS. Still trying not giving up. Also use N-Acetyl Tyrosine that

converts to Dopamine. For some folks I believe it is a problem with blood flow for some it may be a problem with iron not being able to make it into the the basil ganglia of the brain..(I also use the iron that passes through the blood brain barrier into the brain). Also try certain excercises ...as they used to say back in the 60's keep on trucking. Oh by the way gabapentin that some folks use for Rls was first banned by the FDA because it caused bladder cancer...and now they say it is okay for you??? It all depends on what Pharmecutical company has there yes man/lady heading up the FDA.

It is like everything in life. If you abuse it, it's not good for you and everything can be abused.

Prozac and valium are totally different types of drugs. Prozac is used as an anti-depressant while valium (Diazepam) is mostly used as an anti anxiety medication. I found valium hepful when I had augmented from Sifrol a while ago, it seemed to take the edge of the withdrawal symptoms. Valium is a drug that is often abused and as noted is considered highly addictive and that's why it is hard to get now. My GP gives me a repeat prescription every year for treatment of anxiety. It is considered a 'falls risk' for elderly persons also which deters doctors from prescribing it. I
