We are thinking of installing a wet room for my husband, has anyone had experience of doing this? Many thanks dorothy-thompson
My husband organised a local builder friend of ours to convert 2/3 of our garage space to a wet room. This was completed last November and has been wonderful for me to have the independence back of be able to shower myself in a safe environment. We self funded the project as we knew we wouldn't be eligible for grants etc.. In my shower area I have installed a Après shower body dryer which eliminates the use of towels. I also have a Clos a mat toilet that washes and dries the user-this is a real godsend as I can now manage to do everything I need to do (if you know what I mean!) in the bathroom myself.. I had a number of grab rails fitted around the room and there are two Emergency pull cords in case I get into trouble. We had a level entry wetroom shower installed a year ago when my husband was still mobile. It meant he could hold on to the grab handles in a wide enough space for me to shower him. We had it down to a fine art and I didn't get wet!!! And the glass screen means the rest of the bathroom doesn't get wet either.Once he needed carers they too could shower him and when he lost his mobility it meant they could wheel the commode chair in and shower him in that. At the time we had it installed I didn't ask for a grant and by the time it was suggested it was too late because our local authority doesn't give grants retrospectively. It might be an idea to ask about finance first.Without it he wouldn't be able to enjoy a shower and I suppose would have to rely on just a wash.

Mum and Dad had their downstairs toilet converted to a wet room recently and Mum is able to enjoy a shower again. They also paid for it themselves but this was on the advice of the council person who came out to assess them for a grant. They said the room was a little small and this might result in the application being turned down. They also said that it is a fairly lengthy process so my parents contacted a local builder who did the work for them. Worth going for the assessment though as the person was quite helpful suggesting specific sanitary ware to suit their needs.

A wet room is definitely a good idea if the plan is to stay in your own home and this on the ground floor along with living and sleeping accomodation. The first person to discuss this with would be the Occupational Therapist who would then refer on to look at grant.
Just thought i would add that, if in your house, there is a room other than a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory, predominantly used by and required for meeting the needs of the disabled resident OR A SECOND bathroom or kitchen required for meeting the needs of a disabled resident OR A wheelchair used indoors by the disabled resident - you have the grounds to apply for DISABLED RESIDENTS' RELIEF ie a council tax reduction, Following our work we applied otoour local authority who sent us a form to complete which includes a declaration frorn a healthcare professional (we are going to see my neurologist early next month so i'll be aksing him to complete this section for me). If our applciation is successful our house would go down by one council tax band - it all helps doesnt it!?, Best wishes SueW xxx
Sadly I have lost my darling husband but I had a wet room installed to care for him and and it was wonderfull , it was the only way we could manage , you will find it a god-send , good luck
hi, I know I am a bit late in coming to this website, but I thought it worthwhile to point out that most things which we buy which are specifically for use by disabled people are exempt from VAT.

Thank you Weedy, I have already asked for the appropriate forms from HMRC, but everything seems to take 10 DAYS from that particular department of state!!!
