my husband has been having problems with his eyes since Sunday night when for 4 hrs he couldn’t close them, his eyes just wouldn’t close. He also had some kind of spasm in his left arm which his hand clenched in and out and was shaking a lot all down his arm he said his bottom was as well. It happened again this afternoon when wanting to have a nap. Has this happened to anyone else and any advice about the eyes would be appreciated, it was quite frightening.

ambulance crew came out but had just rectified 5 mins before arrival so didn’t end up at a and e. Have an appt with PASU tomorrow.

I’m so sorry for your difficulties with his eyes. My husband couldn’t open his. We had to physically open them. Sometimes they would stay open for a time, sometimes not. I think it would be worse to not be able to close them. Can you physically close them for him ? Do you put drops for dry eyes when this happens? I m sorry I don’t have an answer for you, but hopefully someone will! God bless you for your labors of love!!!

Thanks for your reply, he tried an eye mask but eyes still open behind it. I will try drops at night as well or ointment if neurologist says 2 today

Hi Dar12!

These are our experiences and informations:

If the patient not fully closing his eyes when he is asleep perhaps the lower part of corneas may be drying out. Are her eye tearing? If so an eye ointment in each eye at night would be good to protect the corneas. Hot compresses on the eyes as well. (Jeff166).

"Affar"pointed out: In the morning the eyelids may appear "stuck". To avoid it put eye ointment at night to help lubricate the eyes. It is also possible that the eye may not stay closed all night and it dries the corneas. The ointment is: 97% petroleum jelly and 3% mineral oil. Xialing or cod liver oil capsule can work also.

“pmcdonought” indicates that it may be a fungal problem.

In my opinion, consulting an eye doctor is the right way to go.

Hug and luck.

Luis

My information may be dated, sorry if so. but when I was looking to address similar problems, I read about a procedure to surgically put gold weights and/or tiny springs in the eyelids to allow them to open and close. The symptoms changed so quickly that we never did more than discuss these options with the neurologist. As Luis says, the danger of eye damage from lids that won’t close is a real problem. There are eye ointments that can protect for a while. Warm damp washcloths as a compress can help, and the eyes might be able to stay closed as they are not under a mask.
