My mom has PSP and I'm wondering if there are any correlations with sleeping medications and PSP or Parkinsons.

I've been reading a lot about the correlation between sleep disorders and neurogenerative and cognitive diseases. So, I'm wondering if there are other people out there, like my mom, who took sleeping medication for many years and now have Parkinson's or PSP.

Hi

I don’t in terms of the medication history but sleep issues are a symptom of PSP I believe.

My wife (PSP) took no sleep medications before symptoms, but did take sleep medications latterly due to difficulty sleeping.

Hello. When the initial investigations began into why my husband was falling, we were at the Ear/audiology department. Many things were tried regarding his balance. Then came the question, do you snore? This led to more investigations and it was discovered that he had sleep apnea and he now uses a breathing machine when sleeping. So no, he’s never used medication to help him sleep but he did have problems that affected his sleep and oxygen intake.

Interesting line of thought.

Hello there

When my husband was diagnosed back in 2015 I queried the coincidence that a former colleague, who also lived locally, was also suffering from PSP. Our GP recognised the symptoms having treated him which is why our diagnosis was so quick.

He gave me the best advice I received on our PSP journey. Not to waste my energy by trying to find out the cause but to concentrate on the present and the future. How right he was!

I don't think there is a single cause of PSP and it or they may never be found but the emphasis must be in raising awareness of this devastating disease so that treatment and diagnosis is improved. Caring for someone with PSP takes a tremendous amount of energy, both physical and mental and that should be the main focus.

Hope this helps, keep on keeping on.

Hi there, yes, my mum has had poor sleep a lot of her life but never had medication for it. She would always say that she’d been awake lots in the night and I too have read about the link with sleep issues and dementia generally. Although we’ll never know for sure what the ‘cause’ or causes are for PSP I think it’s natural to wonder and be curious.

Mom never took sleep aids. Like many things in life it is a puzzle and hopefully someone find the right meds to help folks with PSP, CBD etc. Sending Hugs.... Granni B

My father never had any sleeping issues or should I say never took any meds to help him sleep. But he definitely snore. Now in retrospect, he suffered from sleep apnea but we thought it was normal.

Thank you everyone for answering. I think there's obviously a common link with sleep disorders and PSP in general, which is helpful. I was concerned that the medication may have had adverse effects, but it seems like the sleeping disorder itself was the cause and not the medication.

Hi My husband never had any sleep issues now with psp he wakes a lot during night but says he sleeps well in between, he sleeps longer going to bed earlier and getting up later and rests and does during the day. Our neurologist explained that fatigue is a very common symptom of psp and when you think about it the effort of cognitive processing, the physical effort needed to move and not fall and constant vision issues will all takes their toll and if someone is less active during the day waking at night is likely.
