Our Dad was diagnosed with PSP last year but as a family we feel he has been living with this condition for 5 years. He no longer has any balance which he can deal with but its the sleep depravation that is hitting him hardest. My question is has anybody got any advice regarding medication that can aid his sleep? thank you

Hi, it may be worth looking into the drugs he is on at the moment, Amantadine for example can cause problems with sleep

: Hi Northants1!

I'm sorry PSP/CBD/ etc. has entered your family.

Most people only take medication for symptom control after consulting with a physician.

Anxiety and depression are two of the most classical and persistent symptoms.

Control of palliative medication against depression, as well insomnia and anxiety. In our case, one pill of Sertraline-50 at breakfast (depression) and one pill of “Lorazepan-1mg” (insomnia and anxiety), one hour before dinner (*). Of course all these drugs were prescribed by a physician. After around 6,5 years with this medication no appreciable side effects on our case.

(*) I have read that to improve the patient's sleep are using "Melatonin" successfully. Others use “Trazadone”. Ask physician.

Pills can be taken in a spoon of applesauce or similar...this helps it slide down. Also a good pill crusher helps.

A light dinner helps to control insomnia. Also a moderate walk (with aids) or wheelchair before dinner helps to generate a natural fatigue that helps fall asleep.

Some include a dose of 3 to 6 mg of CBD Oil (20/1-CBD/THC) via subling, usually before dinner, to stimulate appetite, reduce anxiety and as a co-adjuvant analgesic in neuropathic pain.In periods of patient more intense anxiety some increase the frequency of the dose by applying it before lunch and before dinner on the same day. I am also sleep deprived, often 2-3 hrs/nt, but last night was best in a year: 8-9hrs! Average about 5hrs. Awful! I am 81 and diag with PSP 5 yrs ago. Doc can give him, free on NHS: Melatonin (gentle), Zopiclone (works but has side effects), and others. Discuss options with Doc, and get appt with sleep nurse. Doc may be able to refer him to sleep clinic. How's his sleep regime, going to bed etc? Good wishes. T imbue PSP

My husband is on Sertraline for low mood and Melatonin to help him sleep better. Even so he wakes up really early and will often say he hasn’t slept.

We've been using Trazadone 100mgs before bed. Dr said give him 1-2 tablets and we have found 1 works just fine.

It is a prescription. He also takes 100 mgs Sertraline each morning for low mood and irritability. Works wonders for him!!

Northants.

We tried everything. In the end only Mirtazapine 15mg (not 30mg - less effective) taken just before bed seems to have worked well over the past 4 years. Other drugs either did not work or only worked for a while (Zopliclone) or made Ruth fuzzy headed the following day (Trazadone). Sadly everyone is different......

My husband had PSP. His doctor perscribed Trazadone for sleep. Later they prescribed Donepizil first 10 mg then later 20 mg. When it got to 20 mg he no longer needed Trazadone because 20mg of Donepizil causes him to sleep.
