Wheelchair uncomfortable

My wife has had a major stroke and is now at home she is unable to walk or stand and has lost the use of her left side. She is hoisted out of bed and into the chair and wheelchair which is large and uncomfortable it is a Azalea Assist with a Systam cushion. Could anyone recommend something to make it more comfortable for her.

Hi Weyhay

Well, from the description of the cushion online it seems to be a good one. Memory foam is the way we went.

When you sit in the chair are you comfortable? What part is uncomfortable? Is it the cushion of the posture and support?

We had a cheap wheel chair with inflatable tyres at first. We then switched to an Invacare Action. This was much more comfortable and easier to push with its stiff frame and solid wheels. The bumps and shakes are taken out in the seating suspension rather than the tyres.

Invacare are the make provided by Social Services around our parts. They are very good indeed.

I hope this helps a little.

Best to you

Kevin

Hi Kevin

Thank you for your advice sitting in the chair is uncomfortable on her bum. Have tried diff cushions but made no difference The wheelchair is hired and looks brand new.,don't know when we will be allocated one and what type it will be but it will need a power pack as I cannot push this one up the slop on our drive

I would go back to the Soc Serv and get tell them that this discomfort from bad posture is putting her health at risk. Those last three words can really motivate services. Maybe if they think you have resolved the issue through hiring then you are no longer a priority?

Best of luck

Make sure all the attachments for leg, foot and arm are adjusted for her. Proper fit makes a world of difference in wheelchair comfort.

Thanks for the advice. I try to make it comfortable for her but sitting for 4 hours in the chair gives her a num bum and I have bought different cushions but she has not yet found one to suit her
