Dry, flaky skin

I read that Parkinson's Disease (and I'm assuming Atypical Parkinsonism) can cause dry flaky skin. I didn't make this up. I actually read it in a few different articles. My husband's skin has always been fairly dry but in the last year has gotten extremely bad. Face, arms, legs. Is this yet another symptom? Any ideas and any tips out there?

My husband had CBD (unconfirmed by autopsy).

He was a fair skinned redhead and burned easily. He often used lanolin for chafing and for dry skin in his youth.

There have been others on this site who have had itchy skin.

About 2 years before my love was diagnosed in his 70's, he had lots of warty skin lumps on his back and a horny piece on his hand. This was removed with negative result for cancer.

The lumps on his back got bigger and itchy and he scratched himself raw in places. His skin on arms, upper legs, front torso, scalp and ears got very scaly, like an allover dandruff. His scalp had large, slightly raised patches that looked a bit like cradle cap on a baby. Doctor sent him to a skin specialist who diagnosed ichthyosis and gave him some cream. The cream did not help, and I was not convinced!

Our doctor suggested bathing in pinetar solution to ease the itching. It did help - but at a similar time, my love 'forgot' how to get himself out of the bath! That also put me on another quest for a different diagnosis, along the lines of Parkinsons Plus!

Meanwhile, I suggested to our doctor that it might be psoriasis and he prescribed daivobet ointment to put on twice a day. This was very sticky when put on everywhere he itched, had warts and loose scaly skin. He could not do it himself, so I had to do it. Bit like greasing the pig!! But it worked! It reduced all the scaliness, smoothed his skin and the warts sort of fell off! The itchiness reduced.

My thoughts on the scaly skin and Parkinsons Plus diseases are that this is another sense that has stopped being managed by the brain. No medical knowledge to back this up!

So whatever the diagnosis, daivobet worked for him!

I hope it will work for you and yours.

Big hug

My hubby has CBD, gets a terrible dry scalp almost like cradle cap, I use a tee tree shampoo and special conditioner its hard cause hus scalp is dry but hair seems oily....

It might be dandruff which can show up anywhere on the body. Larry has it in his forehead according to one doctor.

Hi journeyofjoy!

There are usually episodes of very annoying itching that impels the patient to scratch, producing wounds. The cause seems to be related to a dry skin. Our solution has been: washing hair and a shower with soapless emulsion with olive oil (Sebamed-ph5,5) every two days, then apply moisturizer-nouriser cream with olive oil all over the body insisting on the driest áreas of skin and special moisturizing cream for the feet. If, despite all the precautions, an episode of itching occurs, we apply a cream in the area where the itching occurs, called "Talquistina", which bases its action on the calamine.

Consulting the dermatologist is always a good idea.

Hugs and luck.

Mum's skin is definitely dry and she gets flakey patches. We have been told it could be because her nutrition is not good, her body can't maintain her skin as well. She uses Epaderm or Hydromol as a soap replacement and as a moisturiser - has had a big impact on her legs, which are now lovely and smooth!

My husband has this also. It is worse then I have ever seen. His shirts are full of flaky skin each day. He never had sensitive skin. We try to wash it and lotion it everyday. It gets better, but never great. I noticed when he was in the hospital and on huge amounts of IV fluids, it got better. Skin peels from behind his ears in big pieces. Unlike anything I’ve seen .

Now his skin is also very sensitive. It gets red and inflamed easily. Good luck.
