Mum was advised to have a peg fitted but decided against it. She is still managing to eat (obviously with choking) however she is choking a lot on her phlegm and having trouble clearing her throat. Has anyone had experience with a mobile hoover thing (no idea what it’s called) that clears the throat?
A friend of mine who had MND had one a while back but don’t know if you can still get them xx

Yes Sarah, and it helped a lot. I asked our GP for one after it had been recommended on this site. He had never seen one used in the home before but got one for us via the district nurse. It was a Devilbiss Vacuaide potable suction machine. It was very noisy but cleared my husband’s mouth successfully. I was given training in its use and told not to put the tube beyond his teeth. The first time I did, he managed to damage the tube by biting it but when he got use to it, and at a more advanced stage, he kept his mouth open and I was able to clear his throat. I used it regularly throughout the day and the carers used it at night.
Some people talk about clearing the mouth or clearing the throat! Big difference.
My wife has some obstruction in her respiration system, specially when she goes to bed. for several hours she makes a lot of noise, kind of snoring but not exactly that and showing clearly that there is obstruction somewhere.
After several hours the problem subsides and I can come to bed and sleep next to her which is just impossible the first few hours after she gets in bed.
We never found a solution and never got much help from her neurologists.
I wonder if the device you refer to would be helpful? Or any other device? Obviously that would help her a lot to get a "recuperating" sleep! (excuse my poor english!)
