Thickening agents

Has anybody experienced sickness with using thickening agents ? My mum has only been using them for just over 2 weeks as she was choking on her food and fluids but the last few days she has suffered terrible stomach pains followed by diahoorea which leaves her feeling very weak.

My husband has used Nutilis thickener for nearly 2 years without any problem. It took a while for him to get used to the taste but he had no tummy upsets with it.

Have there been any medication or dietary changes at the same time??

Hope it soon settles

Hi Tippy,

My brother has been on thickeners for a few months now.

It took a while for him to get used to them and now he panics if a drink is passed to him without thickeners.

He hasn't had any stomach/sickness problems so far. Maybe check with your doctor?

Big hugs.

Thanks Sue for your reply it’s good to know that the thickeners dont seem to have affected others could just be mums actually got gastroenteritis.

Hi Tippy, thanks for your response. Mums diet has been changed to a purée diet so it could be that change that’s causing it.

I guess it could simply be gastroenteritis I suppose when it’s a new diagnosis i am just thinking everything is connected to PSP.

My husband had all drinks thickened and never had a problem with stomach upsets. He hated them at first but became used to th consistency after awhile.

Thanks Kate, yes mum really dislikes the thickening and says they make her more thirsty as the drink is thick it doesn’t quench her thirst.

I’ll keep trying it thou with different flavour juices xx

I used to buy fresh fruit juices or fruit squash that he liked, thicken and then freeze them in small individual snack bags. When he was thirsty I would blast them in the microwave and then squash until they were like an ice slush and spoon feed them, he found that very refreshing. Xx
