Hi everybody, has anyone experienced what I can only describe as psychotic type behaviour ( screaming and shouting or getting extremely upset ) from a PSP patient, some hours after administering the prescribed dose of CBD oil ? This is happening when my wife is given the oil which seems to work on other patients who contribute to our PSP web site. The brand has been recommended by members of this site. would really appreciate some feed back.
CBD oil.: Hi everybody, has anyone... - PSP Association
CBD oil.
Hi edgie
What you describe is more normally associated with taking too much THC. Which is the family of chemicals removed in the production of CBD oil.
In fact there is a growing body of research showing that CBD oil actually reduces the frequency and intensity of psychotic breakdowns for those suffering from schizophrenia.
I can find no reports of behaviour disturbances associated with CBD oil.
So I am a little surprised.
Having said that you're wife may just be one of those who reacts differently to it.
May I ask: Was her reality shifted. For example did she have hallucinations, talk to people who were not there. Did she talk in an irrational manner about things. Such as wanting to see the doctor about a sick house plant? These are the signs of psychotic behaviour as oppose to say a response of uncontrolled emotions.
How long did this behaviour last?
Either way it must have been a horrible thing for you both. Obviously not a good thing to continue with the CBD oil.
Wishing you both the best
Kevin
PS Thinking: I remember reading, and posting, a caution that medical advice should be sought if the person was using any medication which affects the Central Nervous System. Was your wife already on such meds.?
It would be good if you could tell us more.
It's really quite concerning.
Thanks Kevin for replying so promptly. In answer to your questions, I could not think of any other way of describing her behaviour so used the word psychotic possibly wrongly, her reality has not shifted.. As I said screaming and shouting that she has pain in every part of her body (not done before) which lasts for two hours or so. She is on the antidepressant venlafaxine Could that be a medication that affects the central nervous system ?
Hi edgie
I'm trying to fathom it here. So please forgive the ramble.
I'm not a doctor and am thinking out of my depth so to speak, in the hope I might turn up something useful.
I have just read up on Venlafaxine. Though I have a lot of experience of it working in the NHS.
Yes, it does affect the central nervous system, but it is a very safe anxiolytic. Which means that there is no evidence of it reacting with other medications, doing harm, or being addictive.
My wife was on Citalopram, which is also an 'SRI' anxiolytic. e.g. same family as Venlofaxin and she hasn't reacted to CBD oil. Which does not mean that your wife will not react to it on Venlofaxine, but it seems less likely that they interacted.
I'm assuming you gave a 6mg dose of CBD oil and am ruling out her reacting to having too much when she wasn't used to it. (?)
CBD oil has a half life of one to two days. That is the amount of time it takes for the active ingredients to fall to a half in the blood stream after ingesting it. So one would imagine that if the oil was causing this directly it would have lasted longer than 4 hours.
So I am befuddled with this and not a little concerned that this doesn't happen to others.
The fact that it occurred after taking the oil does seem to indicate that it was in some way involved and best avoided. However I can't find any reports of it causing any reactions in others. CBD oil is not a narcotic.
This might be useful reading FWIW

I am so sorry you both have had such a horrible experience.
Sorry I could not be of more help,
Best wishes
Kevin
Many thanks Kevin on the contrary you as always have been a great help.
