Coming to terms with PSP

My mother who turned 70 a couple of weeks ago was diagnosed with PSP about a year ago, they reckon she's probably had it for at least 5 yrs already. She has been in denial since diagnosis and says they've got it all wrong!! She definitely has it unfortunately and has every symptom going, which has progressed rather quickly now, it is so sad to watch her deteriorate. We even had a second opinion to help her come to terms with it, but she still doesn't want to. It is very hard to watch and very hard to help her but we are trying to make her as comfortable as possible. She has become a very difficult person but there are flashes of my Mum at times.

It's an incredibly difficult thing to come to terms with ,my wife was the same and it is only eight months later that she is finally accepting it but unfortunately the dementia aspect often makes her have to go through the whole process again . All you can do is to constantly reassure your mother that you are there for her and ride the difficulties - just keep telling yourself it's the illness talking not your Mum- but it is easier said than done . I am afraid there are no easy answers with this illness . Georgepa

Perhaps if you explained that she will be going through some changes as a result of the PSP she might be accepting as the changes occur. Also tell her that if she acknowledges she has PSP it will be much easier for her body to fight the disease. Just a couple of thoughts. JIMBO
